The United States is working on plans for President Donald Trump to visit India, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said. However, he indicated that the trip is unlikely to take place during the US midterm election period scheduled for November this year. Gor said both Washington and New Delhi are keen to arrange the visit as soon as possible.
Trump’s India Visit Not Expected During Midterm Elections
Speaking to ANI, Gor said discussions are underway regarding the visit, but the US election calendar makes a November trip unlikely. “It’s not any time during the midterms… When the Prime Minister met him in France, the Indian side brought it up that he has been invited. We would love to make that happen sooner than later,” Gor told ANI.
His remarks suggest that both governments remain committed to finalising the visit despite scheduling challenges.
PM Modi to Visit US During G20 Summit
Gor also confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the United States during the G20 Summit in December 2026. He said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has formally invited the Prime Minister to visit the country. The planned visit is expected to further strengthen ties between India and the United States.
Gor Highlights Strong Modi-Trump Relationship
The US ambassador said he has known Donald Trump for nearly a decade and described the relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Modi as warm and friendly.
“I have been with the President for 10 years, so a large part of the conversation was like two friends catching up… but I also told him about my visits to India… I also spoke to him about the growing trade relations. On both sides, we see businesses coming here and going there every week, and it is a win-win situation for both,” the American diplomat further said. He also highlighted the steady growth in trade and business cooperation between the two countries.
Marco Rubio Expects Trump to Visit India Early Next Year
Last weekend, Secretary of State Marco Rubio also spoke about Trump's proposed India visit. In an interview with IANS, Rubio said the US administration hopes President Trump will travel to India early next year.
“We’re hoping that’s what we’re working towards - sometime early next year to have the President come. I think it’s very positive. India is such a close partner and ally of the United States, and the relationship between the Prime Minister and the President couldn’t be closer, which I think is really important in diplomacy.”
Rubio's comments reinforced Washington's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with New Delhi.
Trump Earlier Hinted at India Trip
President Trump had already hinted at an upcoming India visit during the G7 Summit a few weeks ago. While praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump described him as a "very tough negotiator" and a "tough trader."
“We’ll be going to India sometime in the future,” said Trump.
India-US Ties Continue to Deepen
The latest remarks from US officials underline the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States. Although no official date has been announced for Trump's visit, both governments continue to work on the plans. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi's expected visit to the US during the G20 Summit in December is set to provide another opportunity for both leaders to expand cooperation in trade, diplomacy and strategic affairs.
