Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei is unlikely to appear publicly at the state funeral of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, because of serious security concerns amid rising regional tensions. According to Ayatollah Hakim Elahi, the Supreme Leader’s Representative in India, Mojtaba Khamenei wants to attend the ceremony and meet mourners, but security officials have advised against it.
Why is Mojtaba Khamenei expected to stay away?
Ayatollah Hakim Elahi said people close to Mojtaba Khamenei have indicated that he personally wishes to attend the funeral and interact with supporters. However, security agencies reportedly believe the risks are too high and cannot guarantee his safety during such a large public gathering.
“They said it is very dangerous and we cannot provide security for him. I think he will not come out," Elahi told India Today. He added that heightened tensions between Iran and Israel have played a major role in the security assessment.
Security concerns remain high
According to Elahi, Iranian authorities have adopted strict security measures to protect senior leaders and other high-profile figures. The funeral is taking place during a period of increased regional tensions, prompting officials to maintain a high level of security.
Elahi said the inability to ensure complete safety has become the main reason behind limiting public appearances by key members of Iran's leadership.
Iran mourns the loss of its leader
Elahi described the atmosphere inside Iran as one of deep grief following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He said many supporters believe the country has suffered an emotional and spiritual loss that cannot easily be replaced.
“It is a very, very big loss for them. They think they have lost their spirit, their soul. They believe nothing can replace him," he said. He added that people from across Iran, along with visitors from other countries, are travelling to Tehran to pay their final respects.
Thousands expected at the state funeral
The state funeral is expected to draw thousands of mourners as well as international dignitaries. Authorities have put extensive security arrangements in place because of the large crowds and the current geopolitical situation. The event is attracting global attention as it takes place against the backdrop of continuing instability in the region.
Iran says it remains strong
Responding to concerns about a possible escalation with Israel, Elahi said Iran remains prepared despite recent tensions. “Iran still is very strong and is ready to stand up," he said. He also stated that several countries have expressed support for Iran's position during the ongoing regional crisis.
