CCTV footage from the site of a building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan has emerged as rescue teams continue their search operations in South-West Delhi. The incident has claimed six lives so far. One more body was recovered during late-night rescue operations, taking the death toll to six. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and other agencies remained at the site, clearing the heavy debris and searching for anyone who could still be trapped. The building collapsed on Sunday. According to police, the Delhi Fire Service received an alert about the incident at around 1.30 pm. Emergency teams were then rushed to the location to begin search and rescue operations. Police had earlier said that 10 people had been rescued from the collapsed structure.

FIR Registered After Satya Niketan Building Collapse

An FIR has been registered against alleged owner Hariram and others in connection with the building collapse. The incident has renewed concerns about construction safety and fire safety standards in densely populated parts of Delhi. The issue is particularly serious in areas where large numbers of students and other residents live in paying guest (PG) accommodations. Authorities are now facing questions over the condition of buildings and the presence of unauthorised structures in such areas.

MCD Orders Sealing of Illegal Buildings

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken action following the collapse. It ordered that all illegal constructions with more than four floors be sealed immediately. Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi said officials responsible for allowing unauthorised structures to come up would face strict action. “The culprits of the Satya Niketan building incident in Delhi will not be spared under any circumstances. All illegal constructions with more than four floors will be immediately sealed, and strict action will be taken against the guilty officials, leading to their immediate dismissal. These orders will be implemented with immediate effect," Wahi wrote on X. The MCD said buildings meeting the specified criteria would be sealed without delay. It also warned that officials found responsible for allowing such constructions would face stringent action.

Former Delhi Chief Secretary Questions Construction Practices

Former Delhi Chief Secretary Omesh Saigal said the Satya Niketan collapse should not be treated as an isolated incident. Saigal raised concerns about unauthorised construction in several parts of Delhi. He alleged that some buildings have been constructed using unapproved plans, while others have had additional floors added after the original construction. He also expressed concerns about the use of substandard construction practices. According to Saigal, authorities should consider restricting fresh construction in areas that are already heavily crowded and over-developed. He stressed the need for stronger checks to prevent unsafe buildings from coming up in densely populated neighbourhoods.

Political Leaders Raise Student Safety Concerns

The building collapse has also triggered political reactions, particularly over the safety of students living in PG accommodations in Delhi. Congress leader and AICC Uttarakhand in-charge Kumari Selja questioned the BJP government over the safety of students who travel to the national capital with hopes of building their careers. “What is the BJP government doing? They have forgotten what happened at the coaching centre. A mafia is operating in Delhi. These children are sent away with so many hopes. They are the only support for their parents. Who is responsible for their safety?" Selja said. Her comments highlighted concerns about the safety conditions faced by students who live in rented rooms and PG facilities in the capital.

NSUI Raises Concerns Over Rescue Operations

NSUI President Vinod Jakhar described the situation as extremely serious. He said rescue teams were continuing their operations under difficult conditions. Jakhar claimed that several students recovered from the debris had died. He also said some of his colleagues had suffered serious injuries while helping with the rescue effort. “Rescue operations are ongoing, and conditions are dire. Almost all the students being pulled out are dead. We tried our best to get those students out; we actually succeeded in rescuing about three of them," Jakhar told ANI. He also questioned the emergency response and said medical teams, police personnel and firefighters should have reached the location quickly.

BJP Youth Wing Appeals for Speedy Rescue

Meanwhile, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president Rajat Choudhary said the situation remained serious and called for faster rescue efforts. Choudhary said a large number of ambulances and doctors were available at the site. He urged both the Delhi and Central governments to make every possible effort to rescue people who might still be trapped beneath the debris. Rescue and search operations continued as authorities worked to clear the collapsed structure and determine the circumstances that led to the deadly Satya Niketan building collapse.
