India’s defence production has reached its highest level in history, despite global uncertainties and ongoing conflicts. On Saturday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the country produced defence goods worth ₹1,50,590 crore in the financial year 2024-25.

Significant Growth Over the Years

This marks an 18% jump compared to the previous year. More strikingly, production has risen by 90% since 2019-20, when it stood at ₹79,071 crore.

Singh praised all those involved, stating, “I commend the collective efforts of the Department of Defence Production and all stakeholders, i.e., DPSUs, public sector manufacturers, and the private industry, in achieving this landmark. This upward trajectory is a clear indicator of India’s strengthening defence industrial base.”

Public and Private Sector Contributions

According to official data, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs produced nearly 77% of the total output. The private sector contributed 23%, showing a 2% increase in its share compared to previous years. This reflects its expanding role in India’s defence ecosystem.

Policy Reforms Driving Growth

The Ministry of Defence credited this growth to long-term policy changes, a better business environment, and a strong push for indigenisation in the last decade. In FY 2024-25, DPSU output grew by 16%, while the private sector’s production surged by 28%.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Reduced Imports

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, India aims to reduce reliance on foreign imports. The focus is on building a self-sufficient defence industry that not only meets domestic needs but also boosts export capabilities.
