Luka Majcen played a key role as Punjab FC defeated Bengaluru FC 3-2 in the Indian Super League 2024-25 season. The match took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. This victory ended Punjab’s seven-match winless streak, and with three points in hand, they remain in ninth place with 23 points.

In the 23rd minute, Alberto Noguera took a precise corner that found Sunil Chhetri. His header was on target, but it was blocked. Then, in the 36th minute, Noguera tried again, sending a corner to Rahul Bheke. However, Bheke’s shot sailed over the bar. Punjab FC came close to scoring in the 40th minute. Muhammad Suhail, positioned inside the box, received a pass from Ricky Shabong. Unfortunately, Suhail’s shot went wide of the left post. Just before halftime, Bengaluru FC had another chance. Roshan Singh curled in a cross to Edgar Mendez, but Mendez’s header missed the target, and the score remained 0-0.

Second Half Action

Bengaluru FC struck first in the 49th minute. Sunil Chhetri made a run down the left and crossed into the box. The ball deflected off Mendez’s boot and into the net, giving Bengaluru a 1-0 lead. However, Punjab FC responded quickly. In the 55th minute, Petros Giakoumakis earned a penalty. Asmir Suljic stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick, bringing the score to 1-1.

The Turning Point

In the 79th minute, Punjab FC took the lead. Khaiminthang Lhungdim crossed the ball to Luka Majcen, whose header was saved by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Yet, Filip Mrzljak was quick to pounce on the rebound, sending the ball into the top corner. Punjab now led 2-1.

Bengaluru FC’s Equalizer

Bengaluru FC responded in injury time. After a corner, Mendez crossed to Bheke, who headed the ball into the net. The score was tied at 2-2, setting up an exciting finish.

Despite Bengaluru’s late equalizer, Punjab FC remained calm. In the dying moments, they launched a counter-attack. Nihal Sudheesh played a perfect through ball to Luka Majcen, who controlled it and calmly finished into the bottom left corner. Punjab secured a dramatic 3-2 win.

Asmir Suljic was crucial in Punjab FC’s comeback. He completed 16 passes, made two crosses, created two chances, and scored a penalty. Looking ahead, Bengaluru FC will face Jamshedpur FC on February 9, while Punjab FC will take on Mohun Bagan Super Giant on February 5.
