Ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump said Kyiv could “end the war with Russia almost immediately.” However, he added that this offer comes with major conditions: Ukraine cannot join NATO and must abandon any plan to reclaim Crimea.
“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” Trump wrote on TruthSocial, days after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. He added, “No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”
Meanwhile, Trump posted that it would be a “great honour” to host Zelenskyy and European leaders, including Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz, at the White House.
Europe Worries About Tension
Trump’s comments may alarm European diplomats. They want to avoid a repeat of Zelenskyy’s tense visit to the White House in February. Back then, Trump and US Vice President JD Vance accused Ukrainian leaders of ingratitude and warned, “You’re not in a good position. You don’t have the cards right now.”
Even before these remarks, Zelenskyy faced pressure to repair the fallout from the Alaska Summit. After meeting Putin, Trump accused the media of misrepresenting his “great meeting in Alaska,” which many viewed as a win for Putin and a setback for the US president.
Trump Claims Progress on Russia
On Sunday, Trump insisted he made “big progress” on Russia, without providing details. During the visit, European leaders plan to ask what security guarantees the US would offer if a settlement is reached.
Russia Seeks Security Guarantees Too
Russia’s envoy to international organisations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said early Monday that Moscow agrees any future Ukraine peace deal must include security guarantees for Kyiv. However, he added that Russia also expects “efficient security guarantees.”
