Apple will make all iPhone 17 models in India and ship them to the United States. Despite President Donald Trump’s high tariffs on Indian goods, the company is moving ahead with its plans, according to Bloomberg reports.
Trump’s Tariffs on India
Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports, the highest in the world. Additionally, he threatened Apple with extra penalties for producing iPhones in India.
Apple Pushes Ahead
Nevertheless, Apple will still make the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air in India. These phones will go on sale in the US from next month.
Shift from China
Earlier this year, Apple moved much of its US-market production from China to India. This shift helped Apple avoid risks from the US-China trade war. Moreover, Covid-19 lockdowns in China had disrupted production, forcing Apple to diversify its supply chains.
India’s Growing Role
Currently, India makes about 20 percent of all iPhones worldwide. Experts predict this could rise to 26–40 percent by 2027.
Between April and July, Apple exported iPhones worth $7.5 billion from India. In comparison, the total export value last year was $17 billion.
Tata and Foxconn in Lead
Apple now produces iPhones in five factories in India, run by Tata Group and Foxconn. In addition, Tata has taken over operations from Wistron and Pegatron and expanded its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu. According to Bloomberg, Tata factories will make half of all iPhones in India within two years.
