Actress Sydney Sweeney stirred controversy after releasing Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss, a limited-edition soap made with her bathwater. The product, marketed towards men, sold out in seconds. However, it also triggered heavy criticism online.
Many compared her product to a similar item linked to her Euphoria co-star Jacob Elordi. Earlier in 2024, a candle marketed as Elordi’s Bathwater went viral following the success of the film Saltburn. Months later, Sydney finally addressed the backlash.
Sweeney Says Criticism Mostly Came From Women
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Sweeney said, “It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting. They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater. I think it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience."
Reports revealed that her soap, which initially sold out immediately, is now being resold for as high as $1,500 (around ₹1 lakh). Sweeney also highlighted that Dr. Squatch, the company behind the soap, was recently acquired by Unilever in a $1.5 billion deal. She did not disclose if she holds equity in Dr. Squatch or other brands she endorses.
Ad Campaign Triggers Another Backlash
This was not the only time Sweeney faced criticism. Recently, she appeared in a high-profile American Eagle campaign with the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The ad played on the words “jeans” and “genes.” However, critics argued it unintentionally praised her appearance, slim figure, and blue eyes as beauty standards.
Trump Weighs In On Controversy
The controversy even reached the political stage. According to USA Today, a reporter informed President Donald Trump that Sweeney is a registered Republican in Florida. Trump responded by praising the ad. He added that he liked it even more after learning about her political affiliation. He also remarked that many would be surprised to know how many Hollywood figures share the same views.
