Mumbai Police went on high alert on Friday after receiving a threat call warning of multiple bomb attacks across the city. The caller claimed that 34 “human bombs” carrying 400 kg of RDX had been planted in 34 vehicles and were ready to explode, causing mass destruction.
Threat Call on Traffic Police Helpline
According to officials, the call came through the traffic police helpline. The caller said the blasts would “shake the entire city” and kill one crore people. The threat was reportedly issued by a group identifying itself as Lashkar-e-Jihadi.
Security Tightened Across Maharashtra
The call came on the eve of Anant Chaturdashi, a day when Mumbai witnesses large crowds for Ganesh idol immersions. As a result, security was immediately heightened across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. Police teams, including bomb squads, were deployed to key locations.
Mumbai Police confirmed that they were taking the threat very seriously and had increased surveillance in sensitive areas.
Past Hoax Threats Raise Concerns
This is not the first time Mumbai has faced such threats recently. On Monday, police arrested a 43-year-old man, Rupesh Madhukar Ranpise, for making a hoax bomb threat. He had falsely claimed that a bomb was planted at Kalwa railway station in Thane district.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) said Ranpise made the call around 4 pm on Sunday. After a thorough search, authorities confirmed there was no bomb.
Similarly, in August, the ISKCON Temple in Girgaon received a bomb threat email. The temple authorities immediately informed police. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) searched the premises but found nothing suspicious. The threat was later declared a hoax.
The temple received another similar threat email in September, which also turned out to be false.
Airport Threat in July
Earlier on July 25, Mumbai Police received a call threatening a bomb blast at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). A detailed inspection of the airport was carried out, but no explosive device was found.
Police Remain Vigilant
Authorities said that while previous incidents turned out to be hoaxes, Friday’s threat was being treated with utmost seriousness due to its timing and scale.
“Security has been strengthened at every sensitive location. We are not taking any chances,” a senior officer said.
Police teams continue to trace the source of the latest call while maintaining strict vigilance across the city.
