CJI Gavai Faces Backlash Over Vishnu Idol Remark, Reaffirms Respect for All Religions

Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Thursday clarified his comments about Lord Vishnu’s idol in Khajuraho. He stated that he respects all religions.

“Someone told me the other day that the comments I made have been portrayed in social media in a certain manner...I respect all religions,” CJI Gavai said.

Court dismisses plea

Earlier this week, a bench led by CJI Gavai dismissed a plea seeking to reconstruct and reinstall a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Consequently, CJI Gavai termed the petition a “publicity interest litigation.” He told the petitioner, “Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation.”

Furthermore, he explained that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). “This is purely an ASI matter,” he added.

Suggestion to worship at Shiva temple

Additionally, CJI Gavai suggested the petitioner worship at a nearby Shiva temple. “In the meantime, if you are not averse to Shaivism, you can go and worship there. There is a very big linga of Shiva, one of the biggest in Khajuraho,” he said.

Social media backlash

However, his remarks quickly sparked backlash on social media. Several Hindu organisations accused him of “mocking” their beliefs. As a result, posts demanding his impeachment went viral, with users claiming that his words hurt religious sentiments.

Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief Alok Kumar urged people to exercise restraint. “Careful words are essential, particularly inside a courtroom,” he said.

Advocates write to CJI

Moreover, several advocates wrote to CJI Gavai, requesting him to withdraw his remarks about Lord Vishnu and Sanatan Dharma.

One such letter read, “I hope the Supreme Court and the President will treat this matter with seriousness and ensure that the dignity of every faith is preserved.”

Ongoing tensions

Overall, while CJI Gavai has clarified his position and stressed his respect for all faiths, the controversy continues to escalate, with both legal and religious communities closely watching the developments.
