The Trump administration presented a 21-point peace plan for Gaza to Arab leaders earlier this week. The proposal aims to end the Israel-Hamas war. Following the meeting, Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism about progress in the coming days.
“We had a very productive session. We presented what we call the Trump 21-point plan for peace in the Mideast, in Gaza,” Witkoff said after the meeting between President Donald Trump and Arab leaders. He added, “I think it addresses Israeli concerns, as well as the concerns of all the neighbours in the region. And we’re hopeful, and I might say even confident, that in the coming days, we’ll be able to announce some sort of breakthrough.”
The plan comes as hopes for a ceasefire have dimmed. Earlier this month, Israel’s strikes in Qatar angered the mediator country, pausing talks between Israel and Hamas. According to CNN, Qatar offered to continue mediating, provided Israel guaranteed no future strikes on its territory.
Key Points of the Plan
The US proposal includes several previously shared measures. For instance, it calls for the release of all hostages and a permanent ceasefire. In addition, the plan lays out a framework for governing Gaza without Hamas and proposes a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces.
While Arab leaders broadly supported the plan, they suggested additional provisions. They called for the prevention of Israeli annexation of the West Bank and the preservation of Jerusalem’s status quo. Moreover, they demanded an end to the Gaza war, the return of all hostages, increased humanitarian aid, and action on illegal Israeli settlements.
Arab Leaders Respond
Arab leaders expressed cautious support for the plan. They emphasized the need for guarantees on key issues, including Jerusalem’s status and the protection of civilians in Gaza. Their input is expected to shape the final agreement.
Escalating Violence in Gaza
Meanwhile, violence continues across Gaza. Civil defence authorities reported that Israeli strikes on Wednesday killed at least 40 people, including 22 in a warehouse near Firas market in Gaza City sheltering displaced individuals.
The Israeli military said it targeted “two Hamas terrorists” in northern Gaza near Gaza City but did not provide further details. Furthermore, during its US-backed ground offensive, Israel directed Palestinians to move to “humanitarian areas” in the south. However, Israel has repeatedly struck Al-Mawasi, a southern area previously declared safe.
Urgent Need for Ceasefire
Consequently, the ongoing attacks and civilian casualties highlight the urgent need for a ceasefire. Diplomats are pushing for renewed talks to end hostilities and restore stability in Gaza.
