Tamil Nadu CM Orders Judicial Probe Into Karur Stampede, Vows Strict Action
Stalin orders a judicial probe into the Karur stampede that killed 39 at Vijay’s rally and promises strict action after the inquiry.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a judicial inquiry into the Karur stampede, which killed 39 people during actor and TVK chief Vijay’s rally. He described the incident as “unprecedented” in the state’s political history and promised strict action once the truth emerges.

Stalin Expresses Sorrow

Stalin spoke with deep grief while addressing reporters on Sunday. “I am standing here with deep sorrow. I am unable to describe the horrific accident that took place in Karur,” he said.

Furthermore, he recalled learning about the tragedy on Saturday evening. “So far, 39 people have died. In the history of our state, never has such a large number of people lost their lives in a programme organised by a political party. Such a tragedy should never happen in the future either,” he added.

Injured Receive Treatment and Compensation Announced

Stalin confirmed that 51 people are receiving intensive care. In addition, he announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

Moreover, the government has set up an inquiry commission led by a retired High Court judge to determine responsibility.
“The truth will come out through the inquiry commission. I do not wish to say anything with a political motive. Once the truth is revealed, strict action will definitely be taken,” Stalin assured.

Stalin Visits Hospital

Late on Saturday, Stalin visited the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur. During the visit, he met the injured and consoled the families of victims. Additionally, he paid tribute to those who died, calling it the worst loss of lives at a political event in Tamil Nadu.

Overcrowding Led to Stampede

The stampede began when thousands of people crowded into the venue, causing panic and chaos. As a result, several women and children collapsed due to suffocation and overcrowding. Ambulances rushed to the scene around 7:30 pm.

Officials revealed that permission was granted for 10,000 people, but nearly 50,000 attended the 1.20 lakh square feet venue, which directly led to the disaster.

Push for Safer Events

Stalin vowed that such tragedies must never occur again. Consequently, the inquiry will identify failures and ensure improved safety measures for future political rallies.

As Tamil Nadu mourns, questions continue to arise regarding security lapses and crowd management failures at one of the state’s largest political gatherings.
