Delhi Bans Entry of Older Commercial Vehicles to Fight Air Pollution
Delhi has banned entry of non-Delhi-registered BS-III and older goods vehicles from November 1 to fight rising air pollution.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has banned entry of all non-Delhi-registered commercial goods vehicles below BS-IV standards. The rule starts from Saturday, November 1.

The step aims to cut vehicle emissions, one of the main causes of Delhi’s winter pollution. The commission said the move is part of broader efforts to improve the city’s air quality.

What Are BS Standards?

BS means Bharat Stage. These are government rules that limit pollution from vehicles. Each stage sets stricter limits on harmful gases. The latest one is BS-VI, which allows very low emissions compared to older stages.

Which Vehicles Are Banned?

The order bans all non-Delhi-registered Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs), Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs), and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) that do not meet BS-IV standards. BS-IV vehicles can enter Delhi until October 31, 2026.

The Transport Department and Traffic Police will enforce the rule. Officials said 23 special teams will check vehicles at entry points.

“There are 23 points from where 90 per cent of the vehicles enter Delhi. There are 23 teams that have been formed. These include traffic police personnel and the transport department's enforcement officers. They will be deployed at designated locations and will turn back vehicles not meeting norms,” an official told PTI.

Main checking points include the Kundli, Rajokri, Tikri, Aya Nagar, Kalindi Kunj, Auchandi, Mandoli, Kapashera, and Bajghera Toll/Dwarka Expressway borders. Each team will have an inspector-level officer in charge. Officials estimate that 50,000 to 70,000 vehicles in the region still fail to meet BS-IV standards.

No Restrictions on Clean or Local Vehicles

CAQM said Delhi-registered goods vehicles will face no restrictions. Vehicles using CNG, LNG, or electricity are also exempt. BS-VI petrol and diesel vehicles can enter Delhi all year without restrictions.

Air Quality Still in Poor Category

Delhi’s air quality improved slightly on Friday but remained poor. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an AQI of 268 at 8 am, which falls under the “poor” category.

Officials said pollution levels rise every winter because of vehicle emissions, stubble burning, and weather conditions that trap pollutants.
