Indian Grandmasters Shine as Narayanan, Diptayan, and Aronyak Reach Round Two

India enjoyed a successful day at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 as Grandmasters SL Narayanan, Diptayan Ghosh, and Aronyak Ghosh progressed to the second round. All three players showcased exceptional skill in the rapid format during their tiebreak matches in Panjim, Goa, on Monday.

Narayanan and Diptayan won both their rapid games to seal qualification comfortably, while Aronyak displayed strong form to clinch his match in the second stage of the Round 1 tiebreak.

Narayanan Dominates with Strategic Brilliance

Known for his command in faster formats, SL Narayanan produced a clinical performance against his Peruvian opponent. Playing black in the first game, he opted for his preferred Sicilian Defense and executed a well-planned attack that broke through white’s position. His precise calculation and tactical awareness left his rival struggling to respond.

Narayanan continued his momentum in the second game, securing victory in just 22 moves while playing white. The win highlighted his superior preparation and aggressive approach. What was expected to be an uneven contest turned into a commanding show of strength from the Indian Grandmaster.

“The middle game was level and the Peruvian did not have a clue once the complexities of strategy arrived,” the report noted, reflecting Narayanan’s control. His attacking intent in the second game sealed the match decisively.

Diptayan Ghosh Impresses Against Chinese Opponent

Grandmaster Diptayan Ghosh from Kolkata also enjoyed a memorable day, defeating Peng Xionglian of China in straight rapid games. He began strongly with the white pieces in the first tiebreaker, taking advantage of small positional errors to claim victory.

In the second game, Peng faltered again, allowing Diptayan to capitalize and secure the match with composure. His 2-0 win ensured a place in the next round and earned him a guaranteed USD 7,000 prize.

Despite being one of the lesser-favored players coming into the tournament, Diptayan handled the pressure impressively. “If the Bengal player was in pressure, he did not show it,” the report added. His ability to stay calm and seize opportunities stood out throughout the match.

The upcoming round, however, promises to be far tougher as he faces stronger opposition.

Aronyak Ghosh Outplays Bartel in Rapid Format

Aronyak Ghosh completed India’s trio of victories by eliminating Poland’s Mateusz Bartel. Although Bartel had chances in the classical section, he could not match Aronyak’s pace and tactical sharpness in the rapid 10-minute format.

Aronyak’s confident display reflected his growing maturity and adaptability. His aggressive play and precise calculation helped him dominate both rapid games and move into Round 2 with ease.

Mixed Results for Other Indians

Not all Indian players advanced. Young GM Ritvik Raja fought hard before bowing out in a tense blitz tiebreaker against Kazakhstan’s 2024 World Junior Champion Nogirbek Kazybek. The thrilling contest ended 5-3 in favor of the Kazakh Grandmaster, but Ritvik earned praise for his resilience.

Meanwhile, M R Lalith Babu, playing his first World Cup, was knocked out after a long battle against Max Warmerdam of the Netherlands. Lalith held his own until the three-minute blitz stage but eventually lost to the experienced Dutch player.

Bright Prospects Ahead

With Narayanan, Diptayan, and Aronyak advancing, India continues to make a strong mark in the tournament. Their success in rapid formats underlines the growing depth and confidence of Indian chess on the global stage. The next round will be a real test of consistency and preparation for all three Grandmasters as they face tougher opponents ahead.
