Nine Killed, Several Injured in Red Fort Metro Blast, Terror Link Suspected
A deadly car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station killed nine people and injured over two dozen, triggering a massive terror investigation across multiple states.

At least nine people died on Monday evening after a car exploded near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi. Officials suspect the incident might be terror-related.

The police received a call about the blast around 6:55 pm. Seven fire tenders reached the spot quickly and brought the fire under control.

Teams from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and forensic experts inspected the area to check for traces of ammonium nitrate, a common explosive ingredient.

Casualties and Medical Response

The Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital confirmed that 24 people were admitted with severe injuries. Of them, eight were declared dead, while 16 remain under treatment.

Officials later confirmed that the toll had risen to nine deaths as one more victim succumbed to injuries.

Prime Minister Reviews Situation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation and expressed grief over the deaths. He spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought a detailed update on the investigation.

“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities. Reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah Ji and other officials," PM Modi said in an X post.

One Arrested; Multiple Agencies Involved

The Delhi Police arrested one suspect linked to the explosion. Officials said a multi-agency probe is underway, involving both central and state security forces.

Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from the metro station and nearby areas. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

The blast created panic in the area, which was crowded during rush hour.

Possible Terror Connection

The explosion took place just hours after police uncovered an interstate terror module tied to banned groups. Officers had seized over 2,900 kilograms of suspected ammonium nitrate, including 360 kg found earlier and another 2,500 kg recovered later.

Officials said the group planned to use the material to make hundreds of powerful IEDs for attacks in Delhi.

However, top intelligence sources told CNN-News18 that “it is too early to draw conclusions.” They also noted that no crater was found, suggesting a possible vehicle malfunction or fire instead of a bomb blast.

Still, investigators have not ruled out any angle.

Hyundai i20 Identified

Preliminary reports say the vehicle involved was a Hyundai i20, carrying two or three people.

Officials said the rear of the car took the main impact, and there was no crater at the site, pointing to a low-intensity explosion or internal malfunction.

The car was reportedly moving slowly when it caught fire. Victims suffered burn injuries, though no pellet wounds were reported.

Eyewitnesses Recall the Horror

Locals described the terrifying moment of the explosion. “I saw the flames from my house and then came down to see what had happened. There was a loud explosion. I live nearby," said Rajdhar Pandey, a resident.

Another witness said, “When we saw someone’s hand on the road, we were absolutely shocked. I can’t explain it in words.” The blast’s force shattered nearby streetlights and threw cars up to 150 meters away in the busy Chandni Chowk area.

Security Tightened Across Delhi

Authorities have raised security across the capital, especially at markets, malls, and transport hubs. The CISF and local police are on high alert.

Central agencies are assessing the scale of the explosion, calling it “significant in nature.”

Forensic experts are analyzing items collected from the scene to identify the exact cause of the blast.

Neighboring States on High Alert

Following the explosion, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have been placed on high alert.

Amitabh Yash, UP’s Additional Director General (Law and Order), told ANI that the state’s police chief had ordered increased security checks and patrolling at religious sites, key districts, and state borders.

Rajasthan also tightened security, particularly at Jaipur Railway Station and the airport. Police have stepped up surveillance and are conducting detailed inspections across high-risk zones.

Investigation Continues

While authorities continue to probe the cause, officials stress that no theory has been ruled out. Whether the explosion was a planned attack or mechanical failure, investigators aim to determine the truth quickly.

For now, Delhi remains on high alert, with police presence increased across sensitive areas.
