Cyclone ‘Senyar’ Expected
In its latest update, IMD said the depression over the Strait of Malacca will move west-northwest. It will intensify into a cyclonic storm by November 26 forenoon. Winds may rise between 60 kmph and 100 kmph on Wednesday.
If the system becomes a cyclone, IMD will name it “Senyar”, a name submitted by the United Arab Emirates.
Furthermore, IMD forecast light to moderate rain across most areas of the Nicobar Islands on November 26. Heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places on November 26 and 27. However, rainfall will gradually reduce from November 28 to 29.
Tamil Nadu on Alert
Meanwhile, another low-pressure system is strengthening over the southwest Bay of Bengal and South Sri Lanka. It may also intensify into a depression. IMD expects this system to bring rain to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
Recently, heavy rain flooded several districts in Tamil Nadu on Monday. Many coastal pockets in Tuticorin went under water.
Consequently, IMD warned that Tamil Nadu may receive heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday. The system may develop into a cyclonic storm. In addition, thunderstorms with lightning may hit Tamil Nadu between November 26 and 29. Kerala and Mahe may face similar conditions on November 26 and 27.
Schools Shut in Tamil Nadu
Due to intense rainfall, authorities shut schools and colleges in parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. They did this to ensure public safety. However, officials have not yet announced whether schools and colleges will remain closed on Wednesday.
