Civil rights groups and migrant-support organizations have called for large protests across the United States. The demonstrations will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Activists are responding to the fatal shooting of a Minnesota woman by a US immigration officer.
Organizers say immigration authorities used excessive and deadly force. As a result, more than 1,000 rallies are expected nationwide.
Meanwhile, protesters are demanding an end to the mass deployment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. President Donald Trump ordered the expansion, especially in cities led by Democratic officials.
Woman Killed During Community Patrol in Minneapolis
The woman who died was Renee Good. She was 37 years old and a mother of three. She was shot while sitting in her car on a quiet residential street in Minneapolis.
At the time, she was taking part in a local “neighborhood patrol.” This community effort tracks and records the movement of ICE officers.
Her death came only days after federal authorities sent nearly 2,000 agents into Minneapolis. Officials described the action as the largest immigration operation ever conducted in the city.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized the move. He called it “reckless” and said it reflected “governance by reality TV.”
Federal Authorities Defend Officer’s Actions
Federal officials offered a different version of events. Homeland Security said Renee Good was “impeding” and “stalking” ICE officers throughout the day.
They claimed the officer fired in self-defense. According to their statement, Good tried to hit the officer with her car. They described the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism.”
Video Evidence Raises Serious Doubts
Local leaders and civil rights groups have strongly rejected that account. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said video footage contradicts what he called the government’s “garbage narrative.”
Activists argue the videos show no justification for deadly force.
Footage recorded by bystanders shows masked officers surrounding Good’s car as it sits at an angle in the street. One officer holds the car door as the vehicle moves slowly forward. Another officer then jumps back and fires three shots into the car.
A separate video recorded by the shooter, identified as Jonathan Ross, shows a calm exchange. Good can be heard saying, “That's fine, dude, I'm not mad at you,” just moments before the shots are fired.
Importantly, the car’s front bumper appears to pass Ross before he shoots. He remains standing afterward and walks away. This contradicts claims that he was run over.
State Authorities Launch Independent Probe
State and county officials in Minnesota have opened a separate criminal investigation. This inquiry is independent of the federal review.
Some federal leaders have argued that local prosecutors cannot charge a federal officer. However, legal experts say federal immunity does not automatically apply in such cases.
Because tensions are rising, Governor Walz has placed the National Guard on alert.
Similar Shooting Reported in Portland
Another shooting involving federal agents has added to public anger. In Portland, Oregon, a Border Patrol officer shot and wounded a man and a woman during a traffic stop.
Federal officials said the driver tried to “weaponize” the vehicle and run over agents. They also claimed the two were suspected Venezuelan gang members in the US illegally. However, authorities provided no evidence to support that claim.
Portland’s mayor has demanded an independent investigation. He said the public cannot rely on the government’s account alone.
Minneapolis Carries Deep Trauma From Past Violence
The shooting has reopened old wounds in Minneapolis. Renee Good was killed just blocks from where George Floyd died in 2020.
Floyd’s death occurred when a police officer knelt on his neck. That incident sparked nationwide protests during Trump’s first term. As a result, the latest killing has hit the community especially hard.
Anger Fuels Protests Across the Country
The two shootings have triggered outrage nationwide. Thousands have already protested in Minneapolis and Portland. Many more are preparing to join weekend rallies.
Organizers are mobilizing under the slogan “ICE Out For Good.”
Civil liberties groups, immigrant rights organizations, and democracy activists are leading the movement. They argue that immigration enforcement has become aggressive and militarized.
Protesters Demand End to ICE Deployments
Protesters are calling for an immediate halt to large-scale ICE deployments. They also want an end to the use of deadly force against civilians.
They say Renee Good’s killing exposes the dangers of current immigration policies. According to activists, the incident shows why urgent reform is needed now.
