Almost all legislators of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Manipur reached New Delhi on Sunday. Leaders from allied parties and the state BJP chief also joined them. They will attend a high-level meeting scheduled for Monday.
The timing is important. President’s Rule in Manipur will end soon.
President’s Rule Set to Expire Soon
The Centre extended President’s Rule in Manipur for six months. This extension will expire on February 12. As the deadline nears, political activity has increased across the state.
Many leaders now expect discussions on forming a new elected government.
Crisis That Led to Central Rule
Violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023. The unrest has killed more than 260 people. It has displaced over 60,000 residents.
Political pressure grew after the crisis. Former chief minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025. Legislators had threatened a no-confidence motion against him. On February 13, the Centre imposed President’s Rule and suspended the assembly.
Strong Hints of Government Formation
BJP MLA N Biren Singh spoke to the media at Imphal International Airport before leaving for Delhi. He said, “all the NDA alliance partner legislators are summoned to attend a meeting scheduled on Monday. We have a recent meeting with the BJP legislators that has huge development. This time the all the legislators of NDA are summoned so it is much likely to be happened for new government formation.”
His statement has raised hopes of a political breakthrough.
Allies React With Cautious Hope
NPP legislator Janghemlung Panmei also reacted before the meeting. He told reporters, “we’ll push for good things to happen for Manipur again... but we will only get to know the next steps after the meeting.”
BJP state president A Sharda Devi echoed similar confidence. She said the meeting could bring a positive step toward forming a new popular government.
Who May Join the Talks
A person aware of the matter said the NDA called the meeting to discuss government formation. The source told HT, “The meeting is scheduled for NDA legislator to discuss the formation a new government. The Kuki-Zo legislators might also attend the meeting.”
Their participation could play a key role.
Assembly Numbers Favor NDA
Manipur has a 60-member assembly. The BJP holds 32 seats. The NPP has seven seats. JD(U) has six. The NPF holds five. The KPA has two seats.
The Congress has five MLAs. Three independents also sit in the House. With this strength, the NDA remains in a strong position.
What Comes Next
The outcome of Monday’s meeting will shape Manipur’s political future. Leaders and citizens now wait to see whether the state will get a new elected government before President’s Rule ends.
