ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026: South Africa Crush New Zealand by Seven Wickets
South Africa secured a dominant seven-wicket win over New Zealand, powered by Marco Jansen’s four-wicket haul and Aiden Markram’s unbeaten 86, confirming their place in the next round.

South Africa thrashed New Zealand by seven wickets in the 24th match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium. After being invited to bat, New Zealand posted 175/7 in 20 overs, a total that looked competitive. Mark Chapman was the highest scorer for New Zealand, while Daryl Mitchell and Finn Allen also played blazing knocks. James Neesham contributed a short cameo of 23 runs off 15 balls to help New Zealand reach near 175.

Marco Jansen was the most successful bowler for South Africa, taking 4/40 in 4 overs, while Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, and Lungi Ngidi took one wicket each.

While chasing, Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock gave South Africa a blazing start, adding 62 runs for the first wicket in just 4.4 overs. When Ryan Rickelton was dismissed by Neesham in the 8th over, South Africa had already crossed 100 runs.

South Africa reached the target losing only three wickets, with 17 balls to spare. Aiden Markram remained unbeaten on 86, while David Miller finished not out on 24. With this win, South Africa confirmed its spot in the next round.

Jansen Halts New Zealand’s Momentum

New Zealand started aggressively, reaching 33 for 0 in 3.1 overs, 57 for 1 in 5.1, and 138 for 4 in 13.5 overs. However, Jansen consistently pegged them back. His spell, including a slower ball and knuckleball, reduced New Zealand to just 37 runs off the final 37 balls. In the last over of the powerplay, he removed Rachin Ravindra and Finn Allen, both key threats, curbing the momentum.

South Africa Neutralizes Seifert and Allen

Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada kept New Zealand’s dangerous duo, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, quiet initially. Allen responded with three fours and a six in the third over bowled by Ngidi, showcasing his timing and power on a pitch that favored batting.

Chapman and Mitchell Attempt a Recovery

Mark Chapman and Mitchell led a brief revival. Chapman hit Maharaj for a six two balls after Glenn Phillips fell to Keshav Maharaj, while Ngidi bowled a tight 10th over. Chapman and Mitchell combined to score 29 in the 11th and 12th overs, putting New Zealand on track for 200. But Jansen returned with a knuckleball that dismissed Chapman and helped Ngidi remove Mitchell at long-on, leaving New Zealand reeling at six wickets down with over four overs to play. Only James Neesham could add some runs, leaving the team with 175—a total South Africa would chase comfortably, aided by dew on the outfield.

Markram Leads the Chase

Chasing 176, Aiden Markram produced a masterclass. He drove the ball beautifully along the ground and in the air, covering both off-side and on-side shots. He square-drove the second ball for four, cover-drove for another boundary, and sent a short ball from Jacob Duffy over long-on for a six. His 86 off 44 balls included the fastest half-century for South Africa in T20 World Cups, reaching 50 in just 19 deliveries. South Africa also posted a joint-highest powerplay score in T20 World Cups with 83 runs, while Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton added useful support with 20 off 14 and 21 off 11 balls, respectively.

Jansen’s Game-Changing Spell

Jansen’s first ball of the night went for a six over mid-on by Seifert. He quickly adjusted by moving mid-on back, leaving no off-side boundary riders. Seifert attempted to exploit the field, but Jansen’s accurate short delivery took an edge to the keeper, resulting in a crucial wicket. His smart variations and accuracy consistently interrupted New Zealand’s rhythm, earning him a four-wicket haul—the backbone of South Africa’s victory.

In the end, South Africa’s blend of disciplined bowling and aggressive batting, led by Jansen and Markram, ensured a comprehensive win over New Zealand, keeping them unbeaten in the tournament against this opponent and solidifying their standing at the top of Group D.
