At least 15 people died after a military C-130 cargo plane carrying banknotes crashed near La Paz, scattering cash and forcing police to disperse crowds.

At least 15 people were killed after a military cargo aircraft transporting banknotes crashed near Bolivia’s capital, La Paz.

Plane Crashes Near El Alto Airport

Bolivia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that the accident happened close to El Alto airport, which serves the capital. However, officials did not release further details about the cause of the crash.

The aircraft involved was a C-130 Hercules. According to local reports, the plane lost control while landing at El Alto International Airport. It went off the runway and slammed into a nearby avenue. The impact crushed at least one car and damaged several trucks, as shown in local media footage.

Flight Origin and Airport Shutdown

The Bolivian Air Navigation and Airports authority, NAABOL, said the aircraft had departed from the eastern city of Santa Cruz. It crashed during its landing attempt in El Alto. Following the accident, airport authorities suspended operations.

Banknotes Scatter, Police Use Tear Gas

The plane was carrying Bolivian currency. When it hit the ground, the banknotes were thrown into the surrounding area. Videos from the scene showed crowds gathering near the crash site to collect the scattered cash.

Police officers responded by firing tear gas to push back people who tried to approach the wreckage.

Two Crew Members Missing

Bolivian Air Force General Sergio Lora said the aircraft had six crew members on board. As of late Friday, two of them were still missing.

Authorities have not yet released additional information about the investigation, as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
