Star drag-flicker Deepika powered India to a 1-0 victory against Germany in the
Women’s FIH Pro League on Saturday. She struck the only goal in the 12th minute with a fierce flick from a penalty corner. Ultimately, her goal sealed the win.
India bounced back strongly after a 0-4 loss to Germany the day before. Now, their next match is against the Netherlands on February 24.
India’s Aggressive Start
Right from the beginning, India attacked with intensity. They pressed hard against Germany’s defense. Meanwhile, Captain Salima Tete took an early shot after a great pass from Sunelita Toppo, but German goalkeeper Finja Starck saved it easily.
India kept pushing and, as a result, earned a penalty corner in the 12th minute. Neha’s quick dribbling created the chance. Without hesitation, Deepika took the shot and sent the ball flying into the net. This marked her 26th international goal.
Strong Defense and Missed Chances
As the game progressed, India continued their high-press game. They kept Germany pinned in their own half. Furthermore, Deepika dominated the first two quarters, helping India hold their lead at halftime.
Shortly after the break, India earned another penalty corner in the 31st minute. However, Deepika’s shot hit the right post, missing a chance to double the lead.
Germany’s Late Push
In the second half, Germany took control and increased their attacking pressure. They won two penalty corners late in the third quarter but, unfortunately for them, failed to score.
Then, just one minute into the final quarter, Germany earned another penalty corner. However, Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam made two brilliant saves. Although Germany kept attacking, India defended fiercely.
Finally, in the 53rd minute, Germany had their last big chance with another penalty corner. Yet, Lena Micheel shot wide, ending Germany’s hopes.
What’s Next?
Looking ahead, India faces the Netherlands on February 24. They aim to keep their winning streak alive in the FIH Pro League.
