India has signed a ₹1,950-crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited to procure low-level transportable radars designed for mountainous terrain. The move aims to strengthen the country’s air defence capabilities in sensitive border areas.
Boost to Detection in Difficult Terrain
The new radar systems will improve the military’s ability to detect and track low-flying threats such as aircraft, helicopters, and drones. These systems are crucial in high-altitude regions where traditional radar coverage remains limited due to challenging terrain.
They will play a key role in border sectors facing China and Pakistan, where mountains often complicate surveillance and defence operations.
Mobile and Rapid Deployment Capability
These radars are designed to be easily transportable and quickly deployable. As a result, forces can move them across different operational zones based on changing threat situations.
This flexibility makes them highly effective in remote frontier areas, where infrastructure is limited but rapid military response is essential.
Push for Indigenous Defence Manufacturing
The deal also supports India’s focus on domestic defence production. Bharat Electronics Limited, a government-owned company, continues to play a major role in developing indigenous surveillance and air defence technologies.
Strengthening Air Defence Network
India has been actively modernising its multi-layered air defence system. The growing use of drones, precision-guided weapons, and stand-off attacks in modern warfare has increased the need for advanced detection systems.
These new radars will help close existing surveillance gaps and improve readiness in strategically important regions, especially in mountainous border areas.
