India has stepped in to support Sri Lanka as the ongoing West Asia conflict disrupts global oil and gas supplies. Acting under its “neighbourhood policy,” New Delhi sent emergency fuel shipments to help the island nation manage its energy crisis.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake thanked India on Sunday for its quick response.
Sri Lanka Receives 38,000 MT of Fuel
Taking to X, Dissanayake confirmed that Sri Lanka received 38,000 metric tonnes of fuel from India.

India-Sri Lanka Leaders Discuss Energy Crisis
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Dissanayake about the crisis caused by the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
“We reviewed progress on key initiatives aimed at strengthening India-Sri Lanka energy cooperation and enhancing regional security. As close and trusted partners, we reaffirmed our commitment to work closely together in addressing shared challenges,” Modi said in a post.

Supply Disruptions Due to West Asia Conflict
According to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka has been facing serious supply disruptions. The country usually imports fuel from West Asia and Singapore.
However, suppliers linked to Indian Oil Corporation contracts failed to deliver shipments due to the ongoing conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
India Steps In with Emergency Supplies
The High Commission said Sri Lanka requested emergency or “rescue supplies” from India. In response, the Government of India arranged shipments through Lanka IOC to ensure fuel availability.
"Due to the above disruptions, Rescue supplies were requested from India from IOCL. The current shipment of 38,000 MT is part of these supplies. Government of India, through Lanka IOC, has extended support to Sri Lanka for maintaining continuity of fuel supply," the statement said.
Breakdown of Fuel Shipment
Out of the total 38,000 metric tonnes delivered, 20,000 metric tonnes consist of diesel, while 18,000 metric tonnes are petrol.
Overall, India’s quick intervention has helped Sri Lanka maintain fuel supplies at a time when global energy routes remain under pressure due to the ongoing conflict.
