US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will pause its planned bombing of Iran for at least two weeks. This decision came just hours after he issued a strong warning that “a whole civilisation will die tonight.”
The announcement followed discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir. Trump shared the update on his Truth Social platform, confirming that he had accepted a 14-day ceasefire proposal aimed at easing tensions in West Asia.
‘Double-Sided Ceasefire’ Proposal Explained
The proposal suggests a two-week pause in all hostilities. It also calls for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. Officials described the plan as a “double-sided ceasefire,” meaning both sides must meet certain conditions.
Trump said, “Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” he said.
He added, “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” he added.
Iran’s Proposal and Progress in Talks
Trump revealed that the US has received a detailed 10-point proposal from Iran. He described it as a workable plan that could help both sides reach an agreement.
According to him, most of the long-standing disagreements between Washington and Tehran have already been resolved. The two-week pause is expected to provide enough time to finalise a broader peace deal.
Israel Also Agrees to Pause Attacks
A White House official confirmed that Israel has agreed to the ceasefire terms. Like the US, Israel will also stop its military actions for two weeks.
However, the ceasefire will only begin once Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a key condition of the agreement.
Oil Prices Drop After Announcement
Following Trump’s statement, global oil prices dropped sharply. Prices had earlier surged due to the conflict, creating economic and political pressure on the US administration.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to stabilise oil supply and calm global markets.
Trump’s Earlier Warning Sparks Concern
Before announcing the ceasefire, Trump had made a dramatic statement that alarmed many, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” Trump had written.
This warning highlighted the seriousness of the situation and raised fears of a major escalation.
Pakistan and China Played Key Roles
According to a report by The New York Times, Iran agreed to the ceasefire after intense diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan. China also played an important role at the last moment.
China, a close ally of Iran, reportedly urged Tehran to remain flexible and help reduce tensions.
Iran’s Leadership Approves Ceasefire
The report further stated that the ceasefire plan was approved by Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. This approval signals strong backing from Iran’s top leadership and increases the chances of a successful agreement.
What Happens Next
The next two weeks are crucial. If Iran meets the conditions, especially reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the ceasefire will take effect fully. Meanwhile, negotiations will continue as both sides work toward a long-term peace agreement in the region.
