KC Venugopal Emerges as Frontrunner in Kerala CM Race
KC Venugopal has emerged as the leading contender for Kerala Chief Minister as the Congress high command prepares to take the final decision on government formation.

KC Venugopal has emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the Chief Minister’s post in Kerala as the Congress leadership prepares to decide who will lead the new government. Venugopal, considered one of Rahul Gandhi’s closest aides, now awaits the final decision from the Congress high command.

The senior Congress leader has steadily risen from Kerala state politics to become one of the party’s most influential organisational figures at the national level.

Rahul Gandhi’s Trusted Organisational Leader

Venugopal recently made headlines after formally announcing Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha in June 2024. The announcement came after the Indian National Congress secured 99 Lok Sabha seats in the general elections, its best performance in a decade and enough to officially claim the Leader of Opposition post.

As General Secretary (Organisation) of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Venugopal handled the responsibility of making the formal announcement. Now, political attention has shifted to whether Rahul Gandhi will support Venugopal’s elevation as Kerala’s next chief minister.

Political Journey From Kerala to Delhi

KC Venugopal was born on February 4, 1963, in Payyanur in Kerala’s Kannur district. He entered politics through the Congress student wing and gradually built his political career in the state. Venugopal first entered the Kerala Assembly after winning from Alappuzha in 1996. He retained the seat again in 2001 and 2006.

During the government led by former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Venugopal served as Tourism Minister. After  spending nearly two decades in state politics, he shifted to national politics by winning the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and 2014. During the UPA-2 government under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Venugopal served as a junior minister.

He later entered the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan in 2020 after not contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2024, he returned to electoral politics and won the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat again by a comfortable margin.

Powerful Role Inside Congress Organisation

Venugopal’s influence inside Congress increased significantly after his appointment as AICC General Secretary in April 2017. He later received the additional responsibility of General Secretary (Organisation), one of the most powerful positions inside the party.

The role gives him major influence over candidate selection, alliance negotiations, party discipline and organisational management.

During the 2026 Kerala election campaign, Venugopal reportedly played a key role in bringing dissatisfied CPI(M) leaders from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) into the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Inside Parliament, he also remains one of Rahul Gandhi’s closest political associates.

In the Lok Sabha, Venugopal usually sits beside Rahul Gandhi and often handles procedural interventions on behalf of the Congress leader.

Key Parliamentary Interventions

Venugopal has frequently represented the Congress during major parliamentary controversies. In June 2024, after Rahul Gandhi alleged that his microphone was switched off while raising the NEET paper leak issue, Venugopal filed an adjournment motion demanding discussion on irregularities in NEET-UG and UGC-NET examinations and questioning the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Later in December 2024, when Rahul Gandhi was reportedly stopped from travelling to violence-hit Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, Venugopal again moved an adjournment motion in Parliament. Another major intervention came in April 2026 after the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha.

The bill proposed implementing the 33 percent women’s reservation after delimitation of constituencies. However, the Opposition wanted the women’s quota without linking it to delimitation.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised opposition parties in a televised address, Venugopal filed a breach of privilege notice against him. He described the Prime Minister’s speech as “unprecedented, unethical and blatant abuse of power”.

CM Race Intensifies in Kerala Congress

Even as discussions over the Kerala Chief Minister post intensify, Venugopal has maintained a calm public approach. During a joint press conference on May 9 alongside fellow contenders VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala, he urged party workers to avoid internal conflict.

"Some unfortunate incidents take place in between. We would like to put all those behind. All of us are party workers and our foremost priority is the party and the people," he said.

Reports suggest Venugopal currently enjoys majority support among Congress MLAs in Kerala. After AICC observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken met all 63 Congress MLAs, Venugopal reportedly emerged as the preferred choice within the legislature party.

According to reports, he also secured support from seven of the ten senior Kerala Congress leaders present during Rahul Gandhi’s consultations.

Rivals Remain Strong Contenders

Despite Venugopal’s advantage, the contest remains competitive. VD Satheesan remains an influential leader within the Congress. The lawyer-turned-politician has won continuously from Paravur constituency since 2001 and became Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly after the UDF’s defeat in 2021.

Before the 2026 election campaign, Satheesan publicly linked his political future to the election outcome. "If the UDF fails, I will retire from politics the very next day and go into exile," he had said earlier.

His leadership bid also receives strong backing from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which has 22 MLAs and remains a major UDF ally.

Meanwhile, veteran Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also remains in the race. Chennithala previously served as Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president, Leader of Opposition and Home Minister. He also holds the distinction of becoming Kerala’s youngest minister.

"We have conveyed whatever we had to say to the high command. The rest is for them to decide," Chennithala told reporters.

Final Decision Awaits Congress Leadership

Despite strong organisational backing, one practical challenge remains for Venugopal. He did not contest the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. If Congress chooses him as Chief Minister, he will need to win a bypoll within six months to continue in office.

However, party leaders currently view that as only a technical issue. The Congress leadership is expected to finalise its decision soon, with the deadline for government formation set for May 23.
