Xi Jinping Says Trump Agreed to ‘New Vision’ for US-China Relations
Xi Jinping said Donald Trump agreed to a “new vision” for US-China ties focused on cooperation, stability, and avoiding conflict between the two global powers.

Xi Jinping said that Donald Trump has agreed to a “new vision” for relations between China and the United States of America. According to a statement carried by Xinhua News Agency, Xi said both countries should build a relationship based on “constructive strategic stability.”

Xi outlines new framework for bilateral ties

Xi explained that the proposed relationship should focus mainly on cooperation while managing competition and differences in a controlled way. He said the new framework would allow both countries to maintain peace and stability despite disagreements.

Xi described the approach as one where cooperation remains central, competition stays moderate, differences remain manageable, and peace continues.

Chinese leader calls for win-win partnership

Xi presented the future of US-China relations as a mutually beneficial partnership. He urged both sides to avoid direct confrontation and work together on global challenges. Xi warned against allowing tensions to push the two nations toward conflict.

“Can China and the United States overcome the Thucydides Trap and create a new paradigm of major-country relations? Can we meet global challenges together and provide greater stability for the world? Can we build a bright future together for our bilateral relations in the interest of the well-being of the two peoples and the future of humanity? These are the questions vital to history, to the world and to the people,” Xi said.

What is the ‘Thucydides Trap’?

The term “Thucydides Trap” refers to a historical theory suggesting that conflict often happens when a rising power threatens to replace an existing global power. In this context, China represents the rising power while the United States represents the established power.

The concept is frequently used in discussions about growing rivalry between Washington and Beijing.

Xi earlier warned over Taiwan issue

Xi’s softer comments later in the summit sharply contrasted with his earlier warning regarding Taiwan. At the beginning of the meeting, Xi reportedly warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could trigger a war between China and the United States.

Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in US-China relations.

Analysts expected pressure tactics from China

Before the summit, analysts widely expected Xi to use both incentives and pressure to secure support for China’s positions on Taiwan, the Indo-Pacific region, and other strategic matters. Reports suggested China believed Trump had limited bargaining power after losing the trade war with Beijing.

Analysts also said Xi could offer economic concessions to help Trump politically. These possible measures included increased Chinese purchases of American goods and new investments in the United States as a face-saving arrangement for the US president.
