FIFA World Cup 2026: United States Thrash Paraguay 4-1 to Launch World Cup Campaign in Style
Folarin Balogun scored twice as the United States powered past Paraguay 4-1 in Los Angeles, recording their highest-scoring victory in FIFA World Cup history.

The United States men's national team began its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in stunning fashion with a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay on Friday.

Playing the first World Cup match on American soil in more than three decades, the hosts delivered an attacking masterclass in front of a packed crowd at Los Angeles Stadium. The performance combined relentless pressure, clinical finishing and confident football as the Americans secured one of their biggest World Cup wins in history.

Fast Start Puts Paraguay Under Pressure

The United States started aggressively and immediately took control of the match. Their high pressing and constant attacking runs forced Paraguay onto the back foot. As a result, the breakthrough arrived early.

In the seventh minute, midfielder Weston McKennie sent a dangerous pass into the box. Paraguayan defender Damian Bobadilla accidentally turned the ball into his own net, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. The early goal lifted the crowd and gave the Americans complete momentum.

Balogun Takes Centre Stage

After the opening goal, striker Folarin Balogun took over the contest. In the 31st minute, captain Christian Pulisic delivered a precise cross into the penalty area. Balogun met it perfectly and found the back of the net to double the lead.

Then, just before halftime, Balogun produced an even better finish. He beat two defenders, created space for himself and curled a brilliant shot into the top corner. Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill had no chance of stopping it. The goal gave the United States a commanding 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

One of America's Best World Cup Halves

The first-half display ranked among the finest performances in United States World Cup history. The Americans attacked with confidence, created numerous chances and overwhelmed Paraguay in every area of the pitch.

Moreover, the team showed far greater attacking quality than it did during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where it managed only three goals across four matches.

Pulisic Injury Scare Raises Concern

Despite the dominant performance, the United States faced a minor concern when Christian Pulisic left the match at halftime. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter replaced him and made history by becoming only the second son in a father-son duo to represent the United States in a World Cup match. His father, Gregg Berhalter, played in the 2002 World Cup. After the match, Pulisic explained that his calf had received a "bit of a kick in the first half."

He added, "hoping it's nothing. I'm taking a little bit of precaution today, but I'm hoping I'll be fine in the next few days."

Meanwhile, coach Mauricio Pochettino said he expects Pulisic to be available for the next game.

Paraguay Pull One Back

The second half was less intense than the opening 45 minutes. Nevertheless, Paraguay managed to get on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute when midfielder Mauricio found the net to reduce the deficit.

For a brief moment, the visitors looked capable of building momentum. However, the United States remained in control and never allowed Paraguay to seriously threaten a comeback.

Reyna Completes the Rout

Substitute Gio Reyna added the finishing touch deep into stoppage time. The midfielder scored late in the match to restore the three-goal advantage and seal an impressive 4-1 victory.

His strike also helped the United States achieve a historic milestone.

Record-Breaking Night for the Hosts

The four-goal performance marked the highest scoring World Cup match ever by the United States men's team. Previously, the Americans had never scored more than three goals in a single World Cup game.

In addition, the three-goal winning margin was the country's largest at the tournament since two 3-0 victories during the inaugural World Cup in 1930.

Strong Position in Group Stage

The victory gives the United States an excellent start in the group stage. Next, the Americans will face Australia in Seattle on June 19 before returning to Los Angeles for a final group match against Turkey on June 25.

Furthermore, the expanded 48-team World Cup format increases the chances of reaching the knockout rounds. Another win, or a pair of draws in the remaining matches, could be enough to secure qualification.

More importantly, the emphatic win over Paraguay demonstrated the strength of the United States attack and sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament. If the hosts continue playing at this level, they could become one of the most dangerous teams in FIFA World Cup 2026.
