The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday said the governments of Bihar and Assam have officially withdrawn cases filed against protesters. The group also claimed that more states could soon issue similar guarantees.
According to CJP leaders, Delhi Police handed over copies of the official notifications from the Bihar and Assam governments confirming the withdrawal of cases.
CJP Claims Rajasthan Has Also Given Assurance
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das later said the party had received an assurance that authorities in Rajasthan would also not take legal action against protesters. “After Bihar and Assam notifications, we have just been guaranteed that no authority will proceed against protesters in Rajasthan,” he said in a post on X.
His statement came just hours after the party raised concerns over reports of detentions and arrests in several states.
CJP Leaders Meet Delhi Police Representatives
At around 2 am on Tuesday, Das shared a video with CJP's legal point of contact, Ratna Singh. In the video, he said they had met Delhi Police representatives who were acting as “interlocutors” during the negotiations.
“We told them that we're afraid that the government won't keep its promise,” Das said while referring to the assurance that no legal action would be taken against protesters.
He also said the meeting lasted nearly three hours. According to Das, Delhi Police provided a copy of the Bihar government's notification withdrawing cases registered against protesters before July 26.
He added that police assured them similar notifications from the Union government and other BJP-ruled or NDA-ruled states could be issued on Tuesday. “They’ve reiterated their promise of releasing guarantee-notifications by union government and other BJP/NDA states by tomorrow. Hopefully, the agreed upon language shall be used".
CJP Urges Protesters to Stay Calm
The party also appealed to protesters who are facing police action to remain patient. “We are with you, we will ensure that lawyers are there to help you,” Saurav Das said in another video message.
He announced that the CJP is preparing to launch a website that will connect protesters with lawyers across different districts. The platform will help people facing legal action find legal assistance more easily.
Kapil Sibal Announces ₹1 Crore Legal Aid
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal announced ₹1 crore in legal aid to support the new legal assistance initiative. He also appealed to lawyers across India to contribute to the effort.
“They will create a website where lawyers willing to provide legal assistance can register their names, location and the kind of help they can offer,” Sibal said during a press conference with Saurav Das on Monday night.
CJP Warns of Fresh Protest if Cases Are Not Withdrawn
The CJP had earlier expressed concern over reports that protesters were being detained and arrested in different parts of the country. Party spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka warned that the organisation would resume its agitation if governments failed to withdraw all FIRs filed against protesters.
Das repeated the same warning in his late-night message to supporters. "We demand that all the FIRs against the protestors be immediately withdrawn, students be released and no future FIRs be filed (in line with our agreement) by Delhi police / Central investigative agencies / Police in BJP-allied states, FAILING WHICH WE WILL BE FORCED TO SIT ON PROTEST AGAIN," Ranka wrote on X.
Protest Ended After Government Accepted Key Demands
Senior CJP leaders, including Abhijeet Dipke, ended their 37-day protest on Saturday. The decision came hours after Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down as education minister and the government agreed to several key demands. These included compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and the withdrawal of cases filed against protesters.
The movement focused on demanding accountability over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and other examination irregularities. It also received widespread support from students and young people across the country.
