Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday claimed that Meta had restricted his Instagram account and made it unavailable in India. He said he had contacted Meta's team to understand the reason behind the restriction. However, he claimed that the company had not explained why the action was taken or how it could be reversed.
Kejriwal Questions Meta Over Account Restriction
Kejriwal raised the issue in a post on X and tagged Meta. He questioned why the company had restricted his account. “Why have you restricted my account? Verbal enquiries at your India office revealed that my account has been restricted in India and is unavailable in India. Why?”
He also said that Meta's India office had not provided any explanation.
“Noone in your office is giving any reasons. Noone is suggesting how restrictions can be removed. All emails written have elicited no response other than routine acknowledgement,” he added. Kejriwal described the company's response as “pretty bad service”.

Screenshot Shows Limited Availability
Kejriwal also shared a screenshot of his Instagram account status. According to the screenshot, his account was “unavailable in some locations.” However, the platform had not removed any of his posts. It also showed that his reach was not limited, he could access all Instagram features, and his account remained eligible for monetisation.
Kejriwal Takes Swipe at PM Modi
The former Delhi chief minister also took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing Meta. He urged the social media company not to “bow down” to the Prime Minister.
“Else he will allow u to run only his own account in India,” he said.
Meta Apologises for Restricting PM Modi's Facebook Post
Kejriwal's allegations came a day after Meta apologised for temporarily restricting a Facebook video message posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to a statement from the company, Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan met Indian officials on Wednesday and apologised for the incident.
“I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for error restricting PM Modi’s post,” Kaplan said. He conveyed the apology to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Government Summoned Meta Executives
The Union government had summoned Meta's senior global executives after Modi's Facebook post briefly became unavailable. The post, shared on July 28, featured a message to India's youth. In it, Modi promised strict action against paper leaks.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who heads the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology, said the post remained unavailable from 12:30 am to 5:30 am before it was restored.
