Corie Walsh, a 40-year-old woman from Frankfort, Illinois, is accused of fatally strangling her son. Prosecutors filed the murder complaint on Friday.

According to witnesses cited in court documents, Walsh had become "very invested" in the Clancy case before the death of her son.
Who Is Corie Walsh?
Corie Walsh is a 40-year-old resident of Frankfort, Illinois. According to reports, she is a mother of four. Prosecutors allege that Walsh killed her 2-year-old son, Barrett, on Tuesday. She now faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with his death. The case has drawn additional scrutiny because of Walsh's reported interest in the Lindsay Clancy trial. Prosecutors said Walsh had discussed the case with friends shortly before her son's death.
What Happened to Corie Walsh's 2-Year-Old Son?
The Frankfort Police Department received a report of an unresponsive toddler at around 4 pm on Tuesday. A neighbour who went to the home reportedly found Barrett hanging from a rafter in the basement. Court documents cited by CNN said a ligature was around the child's neck and his feet were not touching the ground.
The neighbour removed the ligature and lowered the child to the floor. She then began CPR while calling 911 for emergency assistance. The neighbour told authorities that Barrett "was cold and had no pulse," according to court filings cited by CNN.
Emergency Crews Tried to Save the Toddler
The Frankfort Fire District said emergency crews arrived after receiving the call. An ambulance “arrived to find a two-year-old patient in cardiac arrest.” The responders "immediately initiated advanced resuscitative efforts and transported the patient to the ambulance," the fire district said in a Thursday news release, according to CNN.
Emergency responders took the toddler to a hospital in New Lenox. However, doctors could not save him. Barrett was pronounced dead at around 5 pm on Tuesday. A statement about the case also referred to Walsh's mental state at the time of the incident.
“It is also a tragedy in that [Corie] herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened. It is our hope that through a thorough presentation and investigation of the facts, that all of us will come to see this heartbreak for what it is.”
Corie Walsh Was Following Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial
Walsh had reportedly been closely following the Lindsay Clancy murder trial before prosecutors accused her of killing her son. According to court documents, witnesses said Walsh was "very invested" in the case.
At the time of Barrett's death, more than 1,000 miles away, jurors were deliberating in Clancy's murder trial. Prosecutors said Walsh had been discussing the case with friends in a group text message until around 12:30 pm on Tuesday. That was only a few hours before police responded to the report involving her son.
Lindsay Clancy Trial Ends in Mistrial
The Lindsay Clancy trial ended in a mistrial on Friday after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Clancy was accused of killing her three children using plastic bands. Her defence team argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings. The jury was unable to decide whether Clancy should be convicted of murder or found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The connection between Walsh's reported interest in the Clancy case and the death of her son has become a key focus of attention surrounding the Illinois murder case. Prosecutors will now present their evidence as the legal proceedings against Walsh continue.
