US President Donald Trump described his latest meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very productive”, saying the two leaders discussed artificial intelligence (AI) and the future of cooperation between Washington and Beijing. Trump made the comments after meeting Xi at the White House on September 24. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Xi appeared to support his preference for referring to AI as “Super Intelligence”. “Very productive meeting with President Xi for both the USA and China. Tremendous things will be happening. Like almost everyone else, he seemed to like calling the poorly and inaccurately named Artificial Intelligence to a far more accurate and important name, SUPER INTELLIGENCE. That would be ‘SUPER!’ Everyone last night agreed, also,” Trump posted.

Xi urges greater US-China cooperation on AI

China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi stressed that both China and the United States have significant strengths in artificial intelligence. He said competition between the two countries should not prevent them from working together in the AI sector. "The right thing to do is to draw on each other’s strengths, not guard against each other," Xi said. Xi also called for continued communication between Washington and Beijing on AI-related issues. He said the two countries should discuss both the opportunities and risks linked to the rapidly developing technology. The Chinese president further proposed joint efforts to prevent AI from being misused or abused. "AI must be kept under human control. A people-centred approach should be upheld, and AI should be developed for the positive and for good, so that AI will serve the progress of humanity," Xi said. The discussions came at a time when both countries were showcasing new AI models. There have also been growing calls for stronger oversight of Chinese open-source AI systems.

Trump and Xi meet for second time in under six months

Trump and Xi met at the White House on the morning of September 24 during Xi’s three-day visit to the United States. The latest talks marked the second meeting between the two leaders in less than six months. Their discussions covered AI as well as the broader direction of cooperation between the world’s two largest economies. The meeting came as Washington and Beijing continue to engage on areas where the two countries compete while also exploring opportunities for cooperation.

Xi expected to visit US National Archives

After his White House meeting with Trump, Xi is expected to leave Washington following a visit to the National Archives. The facility houses several of the United States’ most important historical and founding documents. Xi’s visit comes as the United States prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of its founding. Trump said on Thursday that he wanted to show Xi “some of the greatest treasures of that proud history.” The US president also said he planned to show the Chinese leader historical artefacts that highlight the long-standing relationship between the United States and China.
