India Lifts Third ICC Champions Trophy with Thrilling Win Over New Zealand
India clinched their third ICC Champions Trophy title with a thrilling four-wicket win over New Zealand in Dubai.

India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in Dubai on Sunday. This victory secured India’s third ICC Champions Trophy title, making them the most successful team in the tournament’s history. With this win, Rohit Sharma continued his impressive winning streak as captain in ICC events.

Looking at the three most recent ICC tournaments—the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the ICC T20I World Cup 2024, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025—Rohit Sharma has lost only one match, which was the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

To begin with, Rohit Sharma finally delivered a strong performance after several starts. He played a crucial knock of 76 off 83 balls, hitting seven fours and three sixes. Moreover, he formed a 105-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill (31), setting the foundation for India’s chase of 252 runs.

However, New Zealand quickly fought back. Glenn Phillips pulled off a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Gill off Mitchell Santner. Immediately after, Michael Bracewell trapped Virat Kohli LBW for 1, leaving India in a tricky situation.

As the game progressed, Rohit’s dismissal created tension. He attempted to charge down the pitch against Rachin Ravindra, missed the ball completely, and got stumped. Consequently, the crowd fell silent as India lost a crucial wicket.

Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel Stabilize the Innings

Despite the setback, Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (26) stepped up. They built a 61-run partnership, expertly rotating the strike and finding timely boundaries to keep the required run rate in check.

Furthermore, New Zealand missed key opportunities. Daryl Mitchell and Kyle Jamieson dropped Gill and Iyer, allowing India to stay on track.

Nevertheless, New Zealand struck back. They dismissed Iyer and Axar in quick succession, reducing India to 203/5 with the required run rate still hovering around six per over.

KL Rahul and Jadeja Finish the Job

At this point, India needed composure. KL Rahul (34 not out off 33 balls) handled the pressure well. Additionally, he built small but crucial partnerships with Hardik Pandya (18) and Ravindra Jadeja (9 not out).

Ultimately, Jadeja sealed the win by hitting a boundary off William O’Rourke in the 49th over. As a result, the stadium erupted in celebration.

With this triumph, India remained unbeaten in all three of their ICC Champions Trophy victories (2002, 2013, and 2025).

Mitchell and Bracewell Boost New Zealand’s Total

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first. Notably, India lost the toss for the 15th consecutive time in ODIs, including 12 times under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

Initially, New Zealand started strong. However, their momentum slowed when Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) dismissed Rachin Ravindra (37) and Kane Williamson (11) in back-to-back overs.

Even so, Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out off 40 balls) helped New Zealand recover. Thanks to Bracewell’s aggressive hitting in the final overs, New Zealand managed to cross the 250-run mark.

Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy (2/45) led India’s bowling attack. Chakravarthy, in particular, overtook Mohammed Shami to claim second place on the tournament’s wicket-takers’ list. Additionally, Rachin Ravindra finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer.
