Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel Raised, Retail Prices Remain Same: Government
The Centre raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre, but retail prices will remain unchanged from April 8.

The central government has increased the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre. According to agencies, the Department of Revenue issued a notification confirming the hike.

New Rates Effective from April 8

Starting April 8, 2025, the new rates will apply. As a result, the excise duty on petrol will be ₹13 per litre, while diesel will carry a duty of ₹10 per litre.

No Impact on Pump Prices

However, retail fuel prices will remain unchanged. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas shared this update on X. It said, “PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of Petrol and Diesel, subsequent to the increase effected in Excise Duty Rates today.”

Hike Justified in Public Interest

Furthermore, the notification stated that the duty hike was imposed “in public interest.” The government used powers under Section 5A of the Central Excise Act, 1944, and Section 147 of the Finance Act, 2002 to enforce the change.
