UNSC Strongly Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Calls for Justice
The UN Security Council condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, demanded justice, and called on nations to unite against terrorism.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has issued a firm condemnation of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The assault, carried out by Pakistani and local terrorists, left 26 people dead, most of them tourists.

UNSC Demands Accountability

On Friday, the 15-member council released a joint statement. It called the April 22 attack a “reprehensible act of terrorism” and urged that those behind it — including planners, funders, and supporters — must face justice.

The statement added, “The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured.”

Although Pakistan is currently a non-permanent member of the Council, the UNSC's statement represented the united voice of all 15 members.

Terrorism Threatens Global Peace

The UNSC made it clear that terrorism in any form poses a major danger to international peace and security. The council sent its deepest condolences to the victims’ families and to the governments of both India and Nepal. It also hoped for a quick recovery for the injured.

Further, the council underlined that “the perpetrators, organisers, financiers, and sponsors” of this terror act must be held responsible and brought to justice.

Urges Global Cooperation

The Security Council asked all countries to support efforts to investigate and punish those behind the attack. It reminded nations of their obligations under international law and UN resolutions to help with such investigations.

Reiterating a long-held stance, the council stated, “Any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever, and by whomsoever committed.”

Moreover, the UNSC urged all countries to fight terrorism through every legal means, while following the UN Charter and international law, including human rights and humanitarian laws.

India Links Attack to Pakistan-Based Group

Tuesday’s attack in Pahalgam sparked widespread outrage in India and abroad. Indian authorities later linked the terror plot to cross-border elements. A proxy group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, known as The Resistance Group, claimed responsibility.

In response, New Delhi announced several countermeasures against Islamabad. These included expelling Pakistani military attachés, closing the Attari land border, and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty.

Pakistan Reacts to India’s Response

Following India’s actions, Pakistan responded strongly. On Thursday, it closed its airspace to Indian airlines and halted trade with India, including trade routed through third countries.

Pakistan also rejected India’s suspension of the water treaty. It warned that any effort to stop Pakistan’s share of water would be treated as an “act of war.”
