Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday for using technology to empower the people and ensure a fair election process. His comments came ahead of the EC’s foundation day on January 25, which is also celebrated as National Voters' Day. These remarks also came amid ongoing criticism from opposition parties, who have accused the EC of favoring the BJP.
Modernizing the Election Process
Modi highlighted the EC’s efforts to modernize and strengthen India’s election process over time. He stated, “It has used the power of technology to strengthen people's power.” He urged citizens to vote in large numbers, emphasizing that participation in the election process is essential to empower democracy.
Additionally, Modi's comments appear to endorse Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), addressing the opposition’s concerns about their integrity.
India: A Beacon of Democracy
The Prime Minister reflected on the early doubts about India's future as a democracy after independence. He reminded the nation that India has proven those doubts wrong. “India is the mother of democracy,” he proudly declared.
Special "Mann Ki Baat" Broadcast
This month's “Mann Ki Baat” aired on the third Sunday instead of the usual last Sunday, as next Sunday marks Republic Day. During the broadcast, Modi shared audio clips from members of India’s constituent assembly, such as Chairman Rajendra Prasad, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee, to emphasize their contributions to the nation’s values.
Ambedkar’s message called for unity, while Prasad focused on India’s humanistic values. Modi encouraged citizens to draw inspiration from these leaders to build a stronger India. He also noted that Republic Day will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution’s implementation.
Unity at the Maha Kumbh
Modi also spoke about the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. He praised the event for uniting people across castes and regions, with no discrimination present. He pointed out the active participation of the youth, which he believes will strengthen India’s civilizational roots and ensure a brighter future.
Finally, he celebrated the global recognition of the Maha Kumbh as a point of pride for all Indians.
