Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stunned Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 6 wickets with 8 balls to spare in the 70th match of IPL 2025. The match took place at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
After an early blow, Lucknow Super Giants posted a huge total of 227/4, thanks to a blazing century by Rishabh Pant and a fiery half-century by Mitchell Marsh.
In reply, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt gave RCB a flying start. After a few quick wickets, Jitesh Sharma came to the crease. He built a quick 100-run stand with Mayank Agarwal and played a superb, blazing knock to seal the win for RCB.
With this victory, RCB confirmed the second spot in the group stage and will play Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings on 29 May, while Gujarat Titans will face Mumbai Indians in Eliminator 1 on 30 May.
Early Blow to RCB
Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the toss and chose to bowl. Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Breetzke opened for Lucknow Super Giants. Nuwan Thushara began the attack for RCB. Both openers struck a boundary each in the first over, which yielded 11 runs.
In the second over, bowled by Krunal Pandya, Breetzke smashed a six. LSG collected 10 runs from it. Thushara returned for the third over and dismissed Breetzke on his fourth delivery. Breetzke scored 14 off 12 balls. Rishabh Pant walked in next and got off the mark with a single. After 3 overs, LSG were 26/1.
Rishabh Pant Takes Charge
Yash Dayal bowled the fourth over. Pant looked aggressive and hit a six along with two fours. Bhuvneshwar Kumar followed with a tight fifth over, conceding just 4 runs. Thushara came back for the sixth over and bowled a no-ball, which helped LSG cross 50. Marsh also added a boundary. At the end of the Powerplay, LSG stood at 55/1. Pant was on 20 off 14 balls, and Marsh on 15 off 11.
Pant and Marsh Build Strong Partnership
Bhuvneshwar bowled the seventh over, and Pant ended it with two sixes and a four. Suyash Sharma kept things tight in the eighth over, giving away only 6 runs. LSG reached 74/1.
In the ninth over, bowled by Romario Shepherd, Pant and Marsh completed their 50-run stand. Marsh struck a six as well. Suyash came back for the tenth over, and Pant greeted him with a six and consecutive boundaries to bring up his half-century in 29 balls. LSG hit the 100-run mark. After 10 overs, they were 100/1. Pant was on 52, and Marsh on 26.
Both Batters Reach Fifties
Yash Dayal bowled the 11th over. Marsh and Pant each hit a boundary. Shepherd's 12th over went for 13 runs, with Marsh hitting a four and a six. Their partnership also crossed 100 runs.
Krunal bowled a tight 13th over, conceding just 4 runs. In the 14th over, Marsh reached his fifty in 31 balls with a six. Pant added a four and a six, making it an 18-run over. LSG moved to 149/1.
Pant Scores a Blazing Century
Romario started the 15th over with a wide, helping LSG reach 150. Pant then smashed two sixes. Bhuvneshwar returned for the 16th over and Marsh greeted him with back-to-back sixes, completing the 150-run partnership. However, Bhuvneshwar dismissed Marsh on the third delivery. Marsh made 67 off 37 balls.
Nicolas Pooran came in and opened his account with a single. Pant ended the over with a boundary. LSG reached 184/2 after 16 overs. Thushara gave just 7 runs in the 17th over.
In the 18th over, bowled by Bhuvneshwar, Pant hit two boundaries to bring up his century in 54 balls. LSG also crossed 200. They stood at 201/2.
LSG Post a Huge Total
Pant continued his assault in the 19th over with a four and a six off Dayal. In the final over by Romario, Pooran started with a boundary. Pant added another six. Romario dismissed Pooran on the fifth ball. He scored 13 off 10 balls. Abdul Samad came in and finished the innings with a single. LSG posted a massive 227/3. Pant remained unbeaten on 118 from 61 balls.
Kohli and Salt Give RCB a Flying Start
Chasing 228, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt opened for RCB. Akash Singh bowled the first over, where Salt and Kohli hit a boundary each. RCB got 9 runs.
Will O’Rourke bowled the second over. Salt hit a boundary, and then Kohli smashed four consecutive boundaries. RCB took 22 runs from the over. Digvesh Singh bowled the third over, conceding only 8 runs. RCB were 39/0 after 3 overs.
Salt Falls, Kohli Holds Firm
Shahbaz Ahmad bowled the fourth over. Salt hit two boundaries, bringing up the 50-run opening stand. In the fifth over, Kohli struck two more fours. Akash Singh came back for the sixth over and dismissed Salt on the fourth delivery. Salt made 30 off 19 balls. Rajat Patidar walked in and scored a single. Kohli closed the over with a boundary. RCB were 66/1 at the end of the Powerplay. Kohli was on 33, and Patidar on 1.
RCB Lose Quick Wickets
Digvesh gave 10 runs in the seventh over. Will O'Rourke struck twice in the eighth over, removing Patidar for 14 and Livingstone for a duck. Kohli and new batter Mayank Agarwal faced Shahbaz in the ninth over. Kohli hit a boundary, and RCB moved to 97/3.
Akash bowled the tenth over. Kohli hit a four to complete his fifty in 27 balls. Mayank followed with three consecutive boundaries. RCB stood at 115/3.
Jitesh and Mayank Rebuild
Digvesh bowled the 11th over, giving 7 runs. Avesh removed Kohli in the 12th over. He made 54 from 30 balls. Jitesh Sharma came in and started with a boundary. RCB were 132/4.
Akash bowled the 13th over tightly, conceding just 7 runs. Jitesh then exploded in the 14th over, hitting a six and a four. RCB added 17 runs. In the 15th over by Shahbaz, Jitesh hit two boundaries and a six. Mayank added a four to close the over. Their partnership reached 50 runs. RCB were 177/4 after 15 overs.
Jitesh Seals the Chase in Style
Avesh gave away 12 runs in the 16th over. Digvesh started the 17th over with a no-ball. Jitesh hit a six to reach his fifty in just 22 balls. A Mankad-out appeal was withdrawn by Pant, showing sportsmanship. Mayank’s single brought up 200 for RCB.
Will O’Rourke bowled the 18th over. Jitesh dominated with two sixes and two fours. RCB stood at 221/4. In the 19th over, bowled by Ayush Badoni, Jitesh and Mayank completed a 100-run partnership. Jitesh then hit a six to finish the game in style.
RCB chased down 228 in 19 overs, winning by 6 wickets. Jitesh Sharma remained unbeaten on 85 off 33 balls. Mayank Agarwal stayed not out on 41 off 23 balls. This win secured RCB the second spot in IPL 2025 Group Stage.
