Violent protests broke out in Manipur's capital, Imphal, on Saturday evening. As a result, the state government suspended internet and mobile data services in the valley districts.
Soon after the violence, officials imposed a curfew in Bishnupur district. Moreover, they issued prohibitory orders in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching. These orders barred gatherings of five or more people.
By 2 a.m. on Sunday, Manipur Police confirmed the suspension on X (formerly Twitter). They also posted official copies of the curfew and restrictions.

Authorities Fear Spread of Hate Online
According to the Home Secretary’s order, the internet shutdown will last for five days starting June 7.
It stated, “In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur especially in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching & Bishnupur districts of Manipur, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur.”
Furthermore, officials warned that fake news and hate content could lead to more violence and disturb public harmony.
Arrests Trigger Protests and Violence
The unrest began after police arrested five members of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, including one of their commanders.
In response, an angry crowd stormed the Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West. They demanded the immediate release of the arrested men.
To disperse the mob, security forces fired several rounds. As a result, at least three people were injured, including two journalists.
Moreover, similar clashes between protesters and police occurred in other parts of the Imphal valley.
Protests in Moreh After Separate Arrest
Meanwhile, fresh tension gripped the border town of Moreh in Tengnoupal district. Residents shut the town down to protest the arrest of a Kuki-Zo man.
Although there was no violence, authorities placed Moreh under high alert. The town shares a border with Myanmar and has seen unrest in the past.
Government Remains Silent
Despite the serious developments, the Manipur administration has not yet issued a public statement. The situation remains tense as people await further updates from officials.
