US President Donald Trump said he had successfully brokered a peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on June 20. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described it as “a Great Day for Africa” and also “a Great Day for the World.”
He mentioned that the deal came together with help from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and confirmed, “It will be signed in Washington on Monday (June 23).”
Trump Describes War as "Known for Violent Bloodshed"
Explaining the significance of the deal, Trump wrote that the war had gone on for decades and was “known for violent bloodshed and death, more so even than most other wars.” He added that the long-running conflict in Africa’s Great Lakes region had already caused “millions” of deaths.
Trump Complains About Not Getting a Nobel Peace Prize
In the same post, Trump revisited a familiar grievance, saying, “I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for this.” He went on to mention several other events where he believes his peace efforts were ignored.
Trump claimed, “I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between India and Pakistan... for stopping the War between Serbia and Kosovo... for keeping Peace between Egypt and Ethiopia.” Referring to the Abraham Accords, he said the deal “will unify the Middle East for the first time in ‘The Ages!’”
Trump’s Peace Claims Don’t Match Global Events
Trump has tried to position himself as a global peacemaker throughout his presidency. But critics say the world has only seen more conflict under his watch.
For instance, although Trump promised to end the Russia-Ukraine war “within 24 hours” if re-elected, the conflict continues to escalate. Russia is reportedly planning a new summer offensive.
Likewise, the tensions between Israel and Iran have grown worse. According to reports, Israel intensified strikes on Iranian military sites, and Trump allegedly gave the go-ahead for the attacks.
India Denies Trump’s Role in Peace With Pakistan
Trump’s claim of brokering peace between India and Pakistan has been strongly denied by New Delhi.
According to Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Prime Minister Modi “clearly conveyed to President Trump” that there was never any talk of US mediation during Operation Sindoor. Misri added, “At no point... was there any proposal for a mediation by the US between India and Pakistan.”
Experts Cautious About Congo-Rwanda Deal
While Trump’s announcement about ending the Rwanda-DRC conflict is a big statement, many experts remain doubtful. They say that lasting peace will depend on clear terms and proper follow-through.
The war between the two nations has been driven by ethnic tensions, armed militias, and competition over mineral resources. Despite years of diplomatic efforts, a real solution has remained out of reach.
