Ghana awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi its highest civilian honour, The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, on Thursday. The award recognised his leadership and global contributions.
President John Dramani Mahama presented the honour during Modi’s official visit to the West African country.
Modi Expresses Gratitude and Shares Honour
Soon after receiving the award, Modi thanked Ghana. He posted on X, “Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana.’”
Moreover, he said the award did not belong to him alone. He dedicated it to the 1.4 billion people of India, especially its youth, its cultural roots, and the strong ties with Ghana.
I thank the people and Government of Ghana for conferring ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’ upon me. This honour is dedicated to the bright future of our youth, their aspirations, our rich cultural diversity and the historical ties between India and Ghana.

Ministry Highlights Strengthening Relationship
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the honour. It described the award as a symbol of the close and growing friendship between the two nations.
In addition, Modi thanked the people and leadership of Ghana for their warm gesture. He said their shared democratic values would continue to strengthen the bond between both countries.
Honour Brings Responsibility, Says Modi
Furthermore, Modi noted that the award deepened the existing friendship. He stated, “The honour deepens the friendship between India and Ghana.” He also said it placed a greater responsibility on him to further build bilateral ties.
As a result, Modi expressed confidence that his visit would bring new energy to their relationship.
Both Leaders Agree to Expand Ties
Earlier in the day, Modi and Mahama held detailed discussions on several issues. Eventually, both leaders agreed to upgrade their relationship to a comprehensive partnership.
Notably, Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ghana in 30 years. This stop is part of his ongoing five-nation tour, aimed at boosting India’s partnerships across the world.
