Modi's First Visit to Namibia Strengthens Diplomatic Ties
This is Modi’s first visit to Namibia as Prime Minister. It is also only the third visit by any Indian Prime Minister to the southern African nation. His arrival reflects India's commitment to strengthening its historic and multi-layered relationship with Namibia. The MEA had earlier stated that “the visit of the prime minister is a reiteration of India’s multi-faceted and deep-rooted historical ties with Namibia.”
Bilateral Talks with President Nandi-Ndaitwah
During this important visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to deepen cooperation in key areas such as trade, energy, education, and defence. The discussions are also likely to include matters of regional and global concern, particularly those involving the Global South, where both nations share common interests.
Homage to Namibia's Founding Father
In addition to official talks, PM Modi will pay tribute to Dr Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s Founding Father and first President. He will visit Heroes Acre, the national memorial site where Dr Nujoma is honoured for leading Namibia’s struggle for independence.
Address at Namibia’s Parliament
Furthermore, PM Modi is expected to address the Parliament of Namibia during his stay. This address will highlight the shared democratic values between India and Namibia and will further reflect India’s desire to build strong people-to-people connections.
Strengthening South-South Cooperation
India views its ties with Namibia as part of a broader vision to build cooperation with the Global South. PM Modi’s visit aims to enhance this partnership and explore new areas of collaboration that benefit both countries. It also reaffirms India’s longstanding support for Namibia, which dates back to before the country gained independence.
