Australian Open 2025: Patten and Heliovaara Win Men’s Doubles Title in Thrilling Final
Patten and Heliovaara staged a thrilling comeback to win their second Grand Slam title, defeating Bolelli and Vavassori 6-7(16), 7-6(5), 6-3 at the Australian Open 2025.
Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara clinched the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open 2025 with an impressive performance. They staged a remarkable comeback, securing their second Grand Slam title after dropping the first set. They defeated the Italian duo 6-7(16), 7-6(5), 6-3 in just over three hours on Rod Laver Arena. This victory adds to their Wimbledon title from last summer, marking two major wins in the last three tournaments.

Resilience After Losing First Set

Initially, the match was challenging. Patten and Heliovaara missed 10 set points in the first set. However, they didn’t let it discourage them. In the tie-break, both teams fought hard, with the score reaching 16-16. Eventually, Bolelli and Vavassori secured the set after Patten’s serve was broken.

Turning the Match Around

In the second set, Patten and Heliovaara regained control. They saved a break point during their first service game, maintaining focus. Both teams continued to dominate on their first serves, winning over 80% of points. As a result, the set went to another tie-break, where Patten and Heliovaara only needed one set point to level the match after Vavassori hit long.

Seizing Momentum in the Decider

With momentum now firmly on their side, Patten and Heliovaara controlled the third set. Heliovaara delivered a brilliant forehand return to break Bolelli’s serve, giving them a 3-0 lead. When the championship was on the line, Patten fought off two break points on his serve. Finally, he sealed the victory with an ace on match point.

Celebrating the Victory

Both players collapsed to the ground in celebration after their hard-fought victory. “What an evening. What an amazing match,” Patten said, visibly excited. “Harri, what a journey we’ve been on. It’s truly special to share a court with you.”

Strong Partnership

Heliovaara expressed his gratitude for their strong partnership. “Could I have done it without you Henry, I don’t think so,” he admitted. “The most important thing in doubles is finding a good partner. I’ve succeeded in that.”

Patten’s Achievements

With this win, Patten becomes the fourth British player to win multiple men’s doubles Grand Slam titles, joining Roger Taylor, Jamie Murray, and Joe Salisbury. Furthermore, he is one of only three British players to win the men’s doubles title in Melbourne.

Match Highlights

The match began with a shaky service game from Patten, allowing the Italians to break early. Despite several missed opportunities, Patten and Heliovaara fought back and eventually broke their opponents. After a long battle in the first set, the Italians took it in a tie-break. However, Patten and Heliovaara regrouped, dominating the second and third sets to claim the victory.
