Mahakumbh Starts Today: Understanding Purnima; Know About
Mahakumbh 2025 has started in Prayagraj, uniting people from all walks of life in a grand spiritual celebration. The event, deeply rooted in tradition, begins on Paush Purnima, highlighting its celestial significance
Mahakumbh, a grand spiritual festival, started today in Prayagraj, India. This event brings together people from different backgrounds, focusing on spirituality and unity. The Kumbh Mela occurs every 12 years at four sacred locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The location depends on specific planetary alignments.

Spiritual Story Behind Origin

The origin of Kumbh Mela dates back to the Samudra Manthan. During this mythological event, a pot of Amrit spilled at four places in India. These sites became the holy locations of the Kumbh Mela.

Types of Kumbh

Over time, different types of Kumbh Melas emerged.
  • Magh Mela happens every year, attracting many people for ritual baths and fairs.
  • Ardh Kumbh takes place every six years, drawing larger crowds.
  • Purna Kumbh occurs every 12 years, last celebrated in 2013.
  • Mahakumbh, the most significant, happens once every 144 years.

Spiritual Retreat: Kalpavas

During the Kumbh Mela, some devotees stay in spiritual retreats called Kalpavas. These Kalpavasis live a disciplined life for 40-44 days, focusing on meditation, rituals, and simple meals.

The Importance of Shahi Snan

The Shahi Snan is the highlight of the Kumbh Mela. This royal bath in sacred rivers is believed to purify and liberate the soul. The Shahi Snan for 2025 starts on January 14, during Makar Sankranti.

Akharas Lead the Procession

The Akharas, religious orders, lead the Shahi Snan procession. Naga sadhus, known for their strict lifestyle, often lead this sacred ritual.

Connection to Paush Purnima

Kumbh Mela begins on Paush Purnima, a full moon day. This day is believed to enhance the spiritual power of the rituals. Many devotees start their Kalpavas on this auspicious day.

Mahamandaleshwar and Notable Figures

Each Akhara has a Mahamandaleshwar who leads rituals. This year, Yogmata Keiko Aikawa from Japan is participating as a Mahamandaleshwar. Laurene Powell, wife of Steve Jobs, is also attending as a Kalpavasi, adopting the name Kamala.
