Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro proposed a campaign to "liberate" Puerto Rico from
US control. He suggested Brazilian forces should lead this effort. This statement was made at the International Antifascist World Festival in Venezuela, where 2,000 participants from 125 countries gathered.
Invoking Bolívar's Legacy
During his speech, Maduro referred to the legacy of Simón Bolívar, stating, “The independence of Puerto Rico is still pending, and we will achieve it with the forces of Brazil and the Abreu e Lima Battalion leading the way.” His remarks came shortly after his controversial third-term inauguration.
International Backlash and Sanctions
However, Maduro’s presidency has faced widespread international condemnation. The US, UK, Canada, and the EU have imposed sanctions on several Venezuelan officials. These actions are part of broader efforts to pressure Maduro’s government.
Increased US Rewards for Maduro's Arrest
Last week, the US raised its reward for information leading to Maduro's arrest on drug trafficking charges from $15 million to $25 million. Similarly, they offered $25 million for Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and $15 million for Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino. They also issued new sanctions against eight other officials, including PDVSA’s head, Hector Obregon.
Maduro Rejects Charges and Sanctions
Despite the accusations, Maduro has consistently denied involvement in drug trafficking. His government views the sanctions as part of an "economic war" designed to cripple Venezuela’s economy.
Maduro’s Disputed Election Win
Despite significant international pressure, Maduro, in office since 2013, was declared the winner of the disputed July election by Venezuela’s electoral authority. However, detailed election results were never published, fueling further controversy.
