India Demands Release of Citizens in Russian Military After 10th Death in Ukraine
India demands Russia release all Indian nationals in its military after the death of another citizen in Ukraine, raising the death toll to ten.
India demanded that Russia release all Indian nationals serving in its military on Tuesday. This call came after the death of another Indian on the frontlines in Ukraine, bringing the total deaths to ten. The Ministry of External Affairs reported that an Indian from Kerala was killed, and another from the same state was injured. While the ministry didn’t provide full details, reports identified the deceased as Binil Babu, 31, from Kuttanellur in Thrissur district.

Continued Calls for Release

India has consistently urged Russia to release its nationals serving as support staff in the Russian military. This issue gained urgency after nine Indian deaths in the conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi even raised the matter with President Vladimir Putin during two meetings last year.

Official Response

“We have learnt of the unfortunate death of an Indian national from Kerala who had apparently been recruited to serve in the Russian Army,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs. “Another Indian national from Kerala, similarly recruited, has been injured and is receiving treatment in a Moscow hospital,” Jaiswal added.

Diplomatic Pressure Intensifies

Subsequently, India took up the issue with Russian authorities both in Moscow and through the Russian embassy in New Delhi. Jaiswal emphasized the demand for the early release of the remaining Indian nationals. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to repatriate the deceased's remains to India. Additionally, the ministry expressed condolences to the deceased's family. It assured that the Indian embassy in Moscow is in contact with the families of the Indians serving in the Russian military, providing all possible assistance.

Progress and Obstacles

Previously, Indian officials revealed that 85 Indian nationals had been discharged from the Russian military last October. However, they continue to work on releasing 20 more. Unfortunately, some releases have been delayed as Russia's defense ministry has yet to annul their service contracts.

Recruitment Stopped, But Issues Remain

Notably, the Russian embassy in New Delhi mentioned that recruiting Indians into Russia’s military ceased in April 2024. They assured efforts to discharge those who voluntarily signed up.

Recruitment Fraud Uncovered

Moreover, Indian authorities contend that many Indians were misled into joining the Russian military by fraudulent recruitment agents. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case against 19 individuals and entities last year for their involvement, leading to several arrests.
