Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers edged out Delhi SG Pipers with a tight 1-0 win in the
Women's Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi today. Kathryn Mullan scored the decisive goal in the 23rd minute during the second quarter. Consequently, the Tigers fiercely defended their lead for the rest of the match.
Intense First Quarter
The game started with both teams creating chances. First, the Tigers made the initial circle entry. Then, Delhi SG Pipers quickly responded. Deepika advanced with the ball and passed it to Emma Puvrez in the circle, but the Tigers intercepted. With five minutes left, Delhi SG Pipers earned a couple of penalty corners. However, Grace O’Hanlon, the Tigers' goalkeeper, saved Deepika’s attempts. Meanwhile, the Tigers also secured a penalty corner in the last minute but couldn’t convert it into a goal.
Pipers Attack in the Second Quarter
In the second quarter, Delhi SG Pipers came out strong and earned an early penalty corner. Although Stephanie De Groof’s shot was saved by Grace O’Hanlon, the Pipers continued to attack. Nevertheless, the Tigers' defense held firm. In the 23rd minute, the Tigers launched a counter-attack. Subsequently, Kathryn Mullan lifted the ball over the advancing keeper Elodie Picard to score. The Pipers tried to equalize but couldn’t break through before half-time.
Third Quarter Pressure
The third quarter saw the Pipers increase their efforts. For example, Navneet Kaur came close to scoring from open play and penalty corners. Despite several opportunities, the Pipers couldn’t find the finishing touch. Meanwhile, the Tigers gradually regained control towards the end of the quarter and maintained their slim lead.
Final Quarter Defense
In the last quarter, the Tigers started aggressively, aiming to extend their lead. At the same time, they continued to show strong defensive skills. The Pipers’ attacks became less frequent. Midway through the quarter, the Pipers intensified their pressure. They pushed the Tigers back and created several chances. However, neither Deepika nor Navneet Kaur could convert these opportunities. Finally, the Tigers successfully defended their 1-0 advantage until the final whistle.
