Novak Djokovic has broken Roger Federer's record for the most Grand Slam singles matches played. Consequently, he advanced to the third round of the Australian Open 2025. The 37-year-old Serb faced a challenge in his 430th Grand Slam singles match. Despite this, he defeated qualifier Jaime Faria 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2.
Surpassing Federer’s Milestone
Now, Djokovic holds the record for the most Grand Slam singles matches played. Previously, Federer had held this record, last playing at Wimbledon in 2021.
When asked about the milestone, Djokovic said, "I love this sport. I love competition." Moreover, he added, "Whether I win or lose, I will always leave my heart out on the court."
First Over-30 to 150 Wins
With this victory, Djokovic became the first man over 30 to reach 150 Grand Slam singles wins.
Looking ahead, Djokovic could make even more history in Melbourne. If he wins the title, he will secure his 25th major, breaking Margaret Court’s all-time record. In the next round, Djokovic will face Czech 26th seed Tomas Machac. Notably, Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, is part of his coaching team.
Teenagers Make History
Meanwhile, Norwegian sixth seed Casper Ruud suffered a surprising loss to 19-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik, with scores of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Interestingly, Mensik and Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who defeated ninth seed Andrey Rublev, made history. They are the first teens to beat top-10 players at the same Grand Slam since Djokovic and Murray in 2006.
On the other hand, German second seed Alexander Zverev secured an easy win against Spain’s Pedro Martinez, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. Consequently, he will meet Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in the third round.
