Soorma Hockey Club maintained their strong form in the
Women’s Hero Hockey India League 2024-25, defeating Odisha Warriors 2-1 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi. Initially, Hina Bano opened the scoring in the 6th minute, and later, Sonam added another goal in the 47th minute. Although Freeke Moes scored a late goal in the 57th minute for the Warriors, Soorma managed to hold on for the win.
Soorma Takes the Lead Early
To start, Odisha Warriors came out aggressively, with Baljeet Kaur advancing into Soorma’s circle and forcing a save from goalkeeper Savita. However, Soorma quickly turned the tables. Ajmina Kujur advanced down the left wing and passed to Hina Bano, who deflected the ball past Jocelyn Bartram to score the opening goal. In response, Sakshi Rana earned a penalty corner for the Warriors, but Ishika Chaudhary missed the target.
Both Teams Battle in the Second Quarter
In the second quarter, both teams continued to fight hard, creating opportunities but failing to convert them into goals. Soorma, in particular, dominated the play but lacked the finishing touch. Eventually, Freeke Moes earned a penalty corner for the Warriors, but Claire Colwill’s shot was blocked by Savita. Freeke’s relentless attacks on the right wing kept Soorma’s defense on edge, yet the score remained unchanged.
Soorma Holds Strong in the Third Quarter
As the third quarter began, Salima Tete and Sonam led Soorma’s charge, dodging defenders and earning a penalty corner. However, Salima couldn’t capitalize on Penny Squibb’s deflection. Despite continuous dangerous runs, Salima found no support in the circle. Meanwhile, Freeke continued to press for the Warriors, earning another penalty corner, but Yibbi Jansen’s attempt was saved by Savita, keeping Soorma ahead.
Dramatic Finish in the Final Quarter
In the final quarter, Odisha Warriors intensified their efforts to equalize. Nevertheless, Soorma struck again. Charlotte Englebert crossed to Sonam, who scored to extend their lead. Subsequently, the Warriors increased their attacking efforts, but Soorma’s defense stood firm. With only three minutes remaining, Freeke Moes intercepted a pass and scored a powerful reverse shot. However, Soorma held their ground and secured the victory.
Ultimately, Soorma Hockey Club’s strong defense and effective counter-attacks earned them their second consecutive win in the league.
