Mohammedan Sporting Club came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Chennaiyin FC at the Kishore Bharati Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday in the
Indian Super League 2024-25 season.
The match began slowly, with both teams cautious in their play. However, Mohammedan SC looked positive, especially with Mirjalol Kasimov taking on a more attacking role in place of Alexis Gomez. Kasimov tried a long-range shot, but it failed to test Chennaiyin FC's goalkeeper, Mohammed Nawaz.
Early Lead for Chennaiyin FC
In the 10th minute, Chennaiyin FC took the lead. Connor Shields delivered a perfect corner, finding Laldinpuia Pachua, who calmly headed the ball past Padam Chhetri in goal. This gave Chennaiyin FC an early 1-0 advantage.
Missed Opportunities for Mohammedan SC
Soon after, Mohammedan SC nearly equalized. In the 20th minute, Carlos Franca made a strong run, but his shot went just off target. Then, in the 28th minute, the hosts earned a penalty after Nawaz fouled Remsanga in the box. However, Nawaz redeemed himself by saving Kasimov’s penalty, marking the third missed penalty for Mohammedan SC this season.
Just before halftime, Chennaiyin FC had a chance to extend their lead. Wilmar Jordan Gil was through on goal, but Padam Chhetri made a crucial save, keeping the score at 1-0.
Chennaiyin FC Doubles Their Lead
Chennaiyin FC came out strong in the second half. In the 49th minute, they capitalized on a mistake by Kasimov. Shields passed to Lukas Brambilla, who drove into the box and slotted the ball past Chhetri, making it 2-0. With this early goal, Chennaiyin FC took control of the game.
Mohammedan SC’s Late Comeback
However, Mohammedan SC was not done yet. They pushed hard in the final stages. In the 64th minute, Joe Zoherliana’s shot rattled the crossbar. Later, Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak missed a chance off a cross from Franca.
With just minutes remaining, the hosts launched a final attack. In added time (90+5’), Manvir Singh scored after a perfect pass from substitute Makan Winkle Chothe. Then, in the 90+12th minute, Laldinpuia was sent off for fouling Manvir in the box. Remsanga stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to level the score at 2-2.

Connor Shields was instrumental for Chennaiyin FC in this match. He provided two assists, setting up both goals. He also created five chances, made six crosses, and completed one clearance.
Looking ahead, Mohammedan SC will face Mumbai City FC on January 26. Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC will return home to host Mohun Bagan Super Giant on January 21.
