Hamas urged for a stronger response against Israel after the country launched an operation in Jenin. The operation, dubbed “Iron Wall,” resulted in the deaths of six people. This attack comes after the Gaza ceasefire, and Jenin's refugee camp, a stronghold of Palestinian militant groups, became the focal point of the operation.
Netanyahu Defends the Operation
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood by the military operation, explaining that it aimed to “eradicate terrorism” in the region. Furthermore, he emphasized that this operation was part of a larger strategy to counter Iran’s influence across Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and the West Bank.
The Israeli military confirmed that the operation in Jenin would continue for several days, signaling an ongoing commitment to their mission.
What Happened in Jenin?
Jenin’s governor, Kamal Abu al-Rub, referred to the military action as an “invasion of the (refugee) camp.” According to reports, Israeli Apache helicopters hovered over the area, while military vehicles filled the streets. Palestinian security forces, who had been conducting operations in the region since December, withdrew from some positions ahead of the Israeli assault.
Anwar Rajab, a spokesperson for the Palestinian security forces, noted that Israeli forces fired on both civilians and security personnel. Several individuals were injured, with one security officer in critical condition.
Hamas to Release More Hostages
In a related development, Hamas announced that it would release four Israeli women hostages on January 25. This would be part of the second round of a prisoner exchange under the
Gaza ceasefire. In return, Israel will free a group of Palestinian prisoners. Hamas official Taher al-Nunu confirmed the hostages’ release but withheld their identities.
