Hero Hockey India League 2024-25: UP Rudras Shootout Win Not Enough as Tamil Nadu Dragons Reach Semi-Finals
The Tamil Nadu Dragons secured a semi-final spot after drawing 2-2 with the UP Rudras in a thrilling match, despite the Rudras winning the penalty shootout.
In a thrilling Men’s Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 match at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, the Tamil Nadu Dragons made a dramatic comeback, drawing 2-2 with the UP Rudras. As a result, they secured a semi-final spot, knocking the Rudras out of the tournament. Sudeep Chrimako (8’) and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (15’) scored for the Rudras, while Jip Janssen (32’) and Thomas Sorsby (53’) found the net for the Dragons. Despite the draw, the Rudras won the penalty shootout 3-2 in sudden death, earning a bonus point.

A Fight for the Final Semi-Final Spot

The Dragons were in fourth place with 17 points, while the Rudras were just behind in fifth place with 15 points. For the Dragons, a draw was enough to secure their place in the semi-finals. However, the Rudras needed a win to make the top four. The match began evenly, but the Rudras quickly took the lead. In the 8th minute, Chrimako controlled a pass from James Albery and fired the ball past Tamil Nadu goalkeeper David Harte, putting the Rudras 1-0 up. Despite this, the Dragons continued to press for an equalizer. However, the Rudras’ defense held firm, preventing them from scoring. In the final minute of the first quarter, the Rudras won a penalty corner, which was saved by Harte. But Upadhyay was in the right place to fire the rebound into the net, giving the Rudras a 2-0 lead.

The Dragons Respond

Despite the setback, the Dragons didn’t give up. They had a great opportunity in the 31st minute when Blake Govers passed to Selvam Karthi. However, Karthi couldn’t control the ball, and the chance was wasted. Fortunately, the Dragons pulled one back in the 32nd minute with a well-executed penalty corner routine. Govers faked a shot, passing to Janssen, who slapped the ball into the net, making it 2-1.

Dragons Keep Pressuring

After the goal, the Dragons pressed for an equalizer. In the 42nd minute, Janssen’s drag flick was blocked off the line by Surender Kumar, preventing them from scoring. Nonetheless, the Dragons continued to attack and made several circle entries, but they couldn’t find a way past goalkeeper James Mazarelo. As the third quarter ended, the Rudras still led 2-1. In the 53rd minute, the Dragons’ persistence finally paid off. They earned another penalty corner, and Sorsby deflected Govers’ drag flick past Mazarelo to make it 2-2. At this point, the Dragons knew that a draw would be enough to send them into the semi-finals.

Rudras Win the Shootout

With the score tied, the Dragons focused on managing possession and running down the clock. While the Rudras won the penalty shootout, the Dragons had done enough during regular play to secure their semi-final spot.
